Below Deck Down Under star Captain Jason Chambers he has been diagnosed with melanoma after a recent biopsy.

The reality star, 52, said on Instagram that he "never used to wear sunscreen when I was on the boat".

He added that he "spent his life in the sun" and never thought he'd experience the "damaging effects of the sun".

"Update on the biopsy I had. It came back with melanoma. I'm in Australia. That was done in Bali," he said.

''The Australian doctors, which are fantastic in Australia, they weren't happy with what the indications told them to go to the stage two which would be to cut out a bigger section and test the glands. I'm waiting for a specimen from Bali."

''Look Australia, two out of three people suffer from melanoma. It's a big thing... I never used to wear sunscreen when I was on the boat."

But he did say he would "put zinc on my nose". 

He told fans to be careful and cautious when in the sun and told them to "cover up".

He added: "For someone that spent their life in the sun, as a child playing sport to working on the ocean, I thought I was resistant to the damaging effects of the sun."

"I love the sun and its health benefits are evident, but be wise and like everything in life, it's all about balance, choose your battles."

He added that for melanoma, "early detection is the key".

"With a diagnosed melanoma biopsy, I now have an anxious wait and what I thought was a skin spot turned in just six months, early detection is the key."

Underneath his post, he received support from fans and even KIIS FM radio host Jackie 'O' Henderson.

"The Sun always catches up with us. Hope everything is ok xx."

Another follower added: "Thank you for bringing awareness to everyone. Sending prayers."

According to the Cancer Council, signs of melanoma, a skin cancer, include a change of colour or size in a mole or itching and bleeding.

The Cancer Council says that once an excision biopsy is done it's tested further for cancer cells.

"Avoid sunburn by minimising sun exposure when the UV Index is 3 or above," the Cancer Council says.

Chambers is known for the reality show, Below Deck Down Under, which follows the cast and crew as they travel around the idyllic Whitsunday Islands.

He joined the show in 2022.
