Amid Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s ongoing divorce, the actor had nothing but praise for his estranged wife. While speaking about their upcoming film Unstoppable in a new interview, Ben complimented Jennifer by admitting she was “spectacular” in the movie.
Ben, 52, was promoting another film, Small Things Like These, when he discussed the team who worked on Unstoppable. Ben served as a producer with Matt Damon, while Jennifer, 55, stars in the movie alongside Jharrel Jerome, Bobby Cannavale and Don Cheadle.
“Unstoppable is a very different movie than [Small Things Like These], but in a way it’s similarly rooted in the passion of really talented artists,” the Oscar winner told Entertainment Tonight in an interview published on Sunday, November 3. “[Director] Billy Goldenberg and Jennifer and Don Cheadle and Jharrel and Bobby Cannavale – all of whom were really passionate about this film.”
The movie is based on Anthony Robles’ 2012 book of the same name. Jharrel plays Anthony – a wrestling champion born with one leg – in the movie, while Jennifer portrays his mom, Judy Robles. “[We] got to know Anthony and Judy and the relationship with them and the passion they had for bringing this story to life,” Ben added. “It kind of speaks to a perfect kind of thing that we’re drawn to, which is we really believe in the power of storytelling when the people involved in it are deeply emotionally connected to the story.”
After praising Jennifer and the rest of the cast, Ben added, “It’s another one we’re really, really proud of. … We believe in the right people and Unstoppable is another example of that.”
J. Lo filed for divorce from Ben in August after just two years of marriage. She listed their date of separation as April 26 and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. The A-listers have yet to finalize the divorce.
Amid the split, the two publicly reunited in September for lunch with their children. They were also spotted attending the same school function in October, although they arrived separately. “Ben would rather not see Jen, but the kids come first,” a source exclusively told In Touch. “He can’t be selfish.”
Ben shares three children with ex Jennifer Garner, while J. Lo has 16-year-old twins with Marc Anthony. “Ben knows he’s going to see Jen at these functions. Their kids go to the same school, so how could he not?” the source added. “Still, it’s awkward.”
The “Get Right” singer opened up about the split in an October 9 interview with Interview magazine. “I was thinking about this time in my life, and I’m like, ‘That’s not what I thought it was going to turn out like,’” she admitted. “And then I thought, ‘No, this is exactly where I needed to be to lead me to where I want to go.’”
However, she added, “That doesn’t mean it didn’t almost take me out for good. It almost did. But now, on the other side of it, I think to myself, ‘F–k, that is exactly what I needed.’”
