Beyonc? has finally claimed the elusive album of the year trophy at the 2025 Grammy Awards, marking a milestone not just in her career but in Grammy history. After four previous nominations and losses, the 43-year-old superstar won the prestigious award for her groundbreaking country album, Cowboy Carter.

Taking the stage alongside her 13-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, Beyonc? expressed heartfelt gratitude. "I just feel very full and very honored. It's been many, many years, and I just want to thank the Grammys, every songwriter, every collaborator, every producer," she said, while Billie Eilish and Lady Gaga were seen wiping away tears in the audience.

Breaking barriers with Cowboy Carter

Beyonc?'s win is particularly significant as she becomes the first Black woman to secure album of the year since Lauryn Hill's victory in 1999. Her album, Cowboy Carter, triumphed over tough competition, including Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard and Soft, Taylor Swift'sThe Tortured Poets Department, and Charli XCX's Brat.

Despite holding the record for the most Grammy wins in history with 35 awards, this is Beyonc?'s first win in this category. She had previously been nominated for I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008), Beyonc? (2013), Lemonade (2016), and Renaissance (2022), losing to artists like Taylor Swift, Beck, Adele, and Harry Styles.

A response to past snubs

Beyonc? didn't shy away from addressing her Grammy history in her music. In her song "Sweet Honey Buckiin'" from Cowboy Carter, she reflects on past snubs with the lyrics: "AOTY, I ain't win / I ain't stuntin' 'bout them / Take that s-t on the chin / Come back and f-k up the pen."

Her husband, Jay-Z, had previously criticized the Recording Academy during the 2024 ceremony, pointing out the irony of Beyonc? having the most Grammys without an album of the year win.

In addition to this historic victory, Beyonc? also won best country album, the first Black artist to do so, and best country duo/group performance for her collaboration with Miley Cyrus on "II Most Wanted."
