Bill Maher has unveiled plans for his latest HBO comedy special to debut in January 2025.
Bill Maher: Is Anyone Else Seeing This? will be taped in front of a live audience at the CIBC Theater in Chicago, and apparently comes with a content warning. “I almost called this special ‘You Won’t Feel Safe’, because if you’re purely a team player in American politics, you won’t. This one is for the 80 percent of Americans who want to see crazy called out no matter where it comes from. And the last twenty minutes on my sex life, that’s for everybody,” the Real Time With Bill Maher host said in a statement on Thursday.
There’s no word from Maher or HBO on whether the upcoming comedy special – the TV host’s 13th for the premium cable and streaming brand – will be his last. In May 2024, the comedian hinted he may be done with stand-up comedy and his next HBO special may be his last.
Maher during a conversation with fellow comic Jerry Seinfeld on his Club Random podcast revealed he felt “nervous” to tell him, “but after this year, I’m going to stop doing [stand-up],” he said.
Nina Rosenstein, executive vp of late night & specials programming praised Maher’s past comedy special output. “Bill’s comedic commentary has been an extraordinary part of HBO for 12 specials and 22 seasons of Real Time with Bill Maher. We truly value his steadfast commitment to honesty and humor, which we know will be front and center in his next special,” she said in her own statement.
Sources at HBO tell The Hollywood Reporter they hadn’t heard anything about Maher’s 13th comedy special possibly being his last one.
Maher has hosted Real Time With Bill Maher, his weekly talk show, since 2003, and hosted the similarly programmed Politically Incorrect for almost a decade prior. He started the Club Random podcast in 2022. He headlined his first special on HBO in 1989 and has followed with another 12 solo specials, including Bill Maher: Is Anyone Else Seeing This? set to bow in January.
The latest comedy special for HBO will be executive produced by Maher, Marc Gurvitz, Marcus Raboy, and Neal Marshall, with Rhonda Freeson producing.
