Bluey is being turned into a movie for the whole family to watch - but fans weren't too pleased by the release date

Emmy and Bafta-winning children’s TV series Bluey is set to be adapted into a feature-length film thanks to Disney and BBC Studios.

The film is due to be released in cinemas in 2027 before later streaming on Disney+, with producers saying it will carry the “charm and humour” of the Australian cartoon series. Joe Brumm, who created the series, will write and direct the film, which will feature vocal talent from the TV show including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Bluey’s mother and father.

Speaking about the project, Brumm said: “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in series three, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new Bluey story to the big screen.”

Fans were overcome with excitement to hear the news, but urged producers to keep Bluey's classic 2D animation style (

The programme, which is shown on CBeebies, follows the adventures of Bluey, a loveable, inexhaustible, blue heeler dog, who lives with her mother, father and her little sister, Bingo. Tom Fussell, chief executive of BBC Studios, said: “We are incredibly excited to take Bluey to cinemas given its extraordinary success on a global scale. It has been such a privilege to work with Joe and the team at Ludo Studio on Bluey’s meteoric rise from inception through to becoming one of the most beloved TV shows of all time.

"BBC Studios has a long history of bringing the very best children’s television to the world in new and exciting ways, so working with Joe and the team, we felt a feature-length film was the natural next step. We are pleased to work with Disney on Bluey’s eagerly awaited theatrical debut and look forward to partnering with Dana, Alan and the entire team on this momentous journey.”

Dana Walden, co-chair at Disney Entertainment, added: “Since its debut on Disney Jr and Disney+, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, uniting families everywhere with its heartfelt stories of play, imagination and connection. We are so proud to expand upon our relationship with BBC Studios to bring the magic of Bluey to the big screen for real life, and we are deeply grateful to Joe Brumm for creating a world that continues to inspire and delight families everywhere.”

Bluey is 2024’s most-watched series globally on Disney+, and fans were quick to share their excitement over the news of a movie version. On X, formerly known as Twitter, many adults said they were just excited as their little ones by the idea of watching Bluey in the cinema.

“Absolutely love love love this show. That’s a three year gap between the last aired episode and a movie. I am hopeful and optimistic we get a couple new episodes sprinkled in between that gap to keep the excitement and interest at its peak,” one person wrote.

A second exclaimed: “I’ve been waiting for this so long and now it’s coming the Bluey movie is coming. Finally!” while another agreed it was a long wait, lamenting: “Aw man we have to wait in 2027 :( but it’s okay.” Alongside complaining about the 2027 release date, some fans also shared advice for producers, urging them to keep it in the original Bluey style: “Awesome! But please keep it in the original 2D animation.”
