Brendan O’Carroll cried to son Danny in emotional TV moment – ‘It was quite overwhelming’

Danny O’Carroll says dad Brendan is his biggest supporter in his Dancing With The Stars journey and is blown away by the love he has received from his family.

The actor is the son of Mrs. Brown’s Boys creator Brendan and says the pair have been on an emotional journey during his time so far on the hit RTÉ show.

Danny has been wowing audiences every Sunday night and says making his family proud is what spurs him on.

He told RSVP Live: “Dad is my biggest supporter. Coming into this, I didn’t have my comfort blanket, which is my family, with me, but the support I have from them is blowing me away.

“After I did the Charleston and topped the leaderboard on week two, dad FaceTimed me in the dressing room. It was quite overwhelming, it was nearly like winning the show because nobody had gotten such high scores that early in the competition before.

“Dad started crying on the phone. It choked me up. He is living for Sundays now – all my family are. They are very supportive, I hope I’m flying the family flag well.”

Tonight is Dedicated Dance Week and Danny has chosen to pay homage to Brendan. The Dubliner didn’t expect it to be such an emotional decision.

He said: “Immediately I wanted to pick my dad. When you love somebody so much and you’ve told them so many times, you find different ways to express your love – getting the opportunity to do it through dance is something quite special. You want to nail it for them.

“I phoned dad to tell him I was going to dedicate the dance to him. He was very happy and he cried, and when I told him why I chose him I just…I’m not going to lie to you, I got a lump in my throat.”

Brendan and his wife Jenny live in Florida when they’re not working on Mrs. Brown’s Boys. Danny is based in Donegal but the father and son see each other as much as they can.

“I am used to the distance, but I still miss him like crazy. I last saw him at Christmas and haven’t seen him since,” he said.

“Once Dancing With The Stars is over, I’ll go on a trip to Florida and spend time with him.

“I could sit here all day and give you every compliment under the sun and nothing would come close to what he means to me. He is the most amazing human.”

Danny has been supported by his girlfriend Tina in the audience every week, but would love to see Brendan come along too.

“He told me if I get to the final he’ll pop back over here. I’d love for him to watch me in the show, but that depends on how far I get.”

Tonight, Danny will perform as Buster Brady in a cha-cha-cha to She’s A Lady by Tom Jones in tribute to his dad. His dance partner, Salome Chachua, who has never watched Mrs. Brown’s Boys before, will be dressed up as Agnes Brown.

“She hasn’t a clue about the show. She has been looking at clips to see what she needs to look like,” Danny laughed.

“Salome likes to dress up a lot when she dances, but when she saw what she has to dress up like this week, I don’t think she was too happy. But tough. Here’s your fat suit, here’s your wig, good luck,” he jokingly added.

Dancing With The Stars airs Sunday nights at 6.30pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player
