For more than a decade, Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan have played Jamie and Claire Fraser, the popular and iconic couple at the heart of Outlander, the long-running television series based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series. Balfe and Heughan sat down exclusively with us to talk all about the second half of season 7 and look back on their time together – and what a time it’s been. The hit series returns at midnight November 22on Starz with 8 new episodes. Watch the video above to find out exactly how Balfe and Heughan feel about this season, and how they’re handling Jamie and Claire’s separation. Wait, Jamie and Claire’s what?
Ahead of the new episodes airing, Balfe and Heughan chatted all about their favorite and least favorite moments, which they affectionately call their “peach and pit.” Balfe introduced this concept back in season 6 in an interview with SheKnows. And later she and Heughan did an Instagram live chat where the two of them quibbled about the word “pit,” since technically peaches are stone fruits, according to Heughan (okay, he’s right). But peach and stone do not sound good together, Sam Heughan. So, we’re going for alliteration over facts. After Balfe explains peach and pit, again, Heughan beams, “My peach – I love saying that,” and Balfe turns around and take sneak peek at Heughan’s, um, peach. If the smirk emoji were in human form, it would be Caitríona Balfe in this moment. Balfe and Heughan talk about the last few episodes of this half of the season being their favorites, and tease that people they love come back. Oooh. As Heughan is explaining his peach, a single piece of confetti falls on the twosome, who don’t miss a beat.
As for their pit (or stone), Heughan says, “I think the pit is the separation for Jamie and Claire.” Balfe adds, “Nothing good happens when they are apart.” When asked how Balfe and Heughan feel about being apart, they laugh, and Balfe jokes, “We’re consciously uncoupling.” Uh oh. Is that Jamie and Claire, or Balfe and Heughan? Balfe replies, “I mean, who knows where one starts and the other ends, I mean who knows.”
Don’t forget to check out when we visited Balfe and Heughan on set and played a little season 7 Outlander trivia with them. Let’s just say Heughan’s peach might be referenced in that too. So many peaches, so little time.
Outlander returns November 22 at midnight on Starz. And keep an eye out for a little special SheKnows and TVLine Sassenach-y surprise, coming soon with Balfe, Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin and John Bell.
