Danny Dyer recently revealed that he and his family were pushed out of their home in a posh Essex neighbourhood after receiving unwanted attention from their neighbours.

In his most recent TV appearance on the Disney+ adaptation of Jilly Cooper's Rivals, the actor plays Freddie Jones, a kind-hearted entrepreneur living among judgmental residents in a wealthy town.

Surprisingly, Dyer’s role is not far removed from his own experiences in real life.

After moving into a four-bedroom home in Essex, he and his wife found themselves ostracised by the local community.

He told the Mirror: "When I moved in people were milling around saying, 'What are you doing moving around here?' questioning me, thinking I was a multi-millionaire, (but) I wasn’t."

Dyer’s character on EastEnders, Mick Carter, may have contributed to his chilly reception.

Mick was part of some difficult storylines on the BBC soap, including one where he carried out an armed robbery.

The character also ended up in jail after being framed for assault but later returned and nearly beat his accuser to death.

Neighbours who seemed unable to separate his on-screen identity from his real one began to lash out in unpleasant ways.

Dyer recalled waking up to find eggs splattered on his property.

Things only escalated, and soon he was having vodka bottles thrown at his home.

He added: "I don’t know what the f*** I’d done but it was my character in EastEnders they didn’t like. It must have been."

Fortunately, Dyer and his family have since relocated to a new area, where they now feel more at ease.

Meanwhile, his role in Rivals has earned the actor praise, after allowing him to showcase a broader range of acting abilities.

Dyer is well known for his 'hardman' roles in Human Traffic, The Football Factory, and EastEnders.

However, audiencees have been delighted by his sensitive portrayal of Freddie Jones.
