Elvis Presley's granddaughter Riley Keough has addressed whether there is a "curse" on her famous family.

Her granddad Elvis Presley died in 1977 at the age of 42, her mother Lisa Marie Presley died in January 2023 aged 54 and she tragically lost her brother Benjamin in 2020 when he was only 27 years old.

Alluding to the many tragedies her family has faced, Keough rejected the idea they are plagued by a "curse", arguing they have faced challenges similar to that of many others.

The 35-year-old reflected on this during a live event at the Jerry Moss Theatre in Los Angeles on the last stop of her book tour.

"I think the word 'curse' is used because my family are looked at as this not real mythology or something, but really it's just very common things like addiction," Riley said, per People.

"Everyone here has loved somebody with addiction issues or has lost somebody tragically."

The Daisy Jones and The Six actress said her "dream" is that there will be no "addiction struggles" within the family in the future.

"I mean, the hope is that the future generations of our family aren't going to struggle so much with addiction. Of course, that's the dream," she said.

Lisa-Marie died following a sudden cardiac arrest in 2023, just as her father Elvis had 46 years prior.

Lisa-Marie's son, and Riley's brother, Benjamin died by suicide in 2020, something Riley said affected her mother immensely.

In her mother's memoir, which she helped complete, Riley wrote about the heartbreaking moment she had to tell her mum of Benjamin's death.

"My mother was asleep in her hotel room. I ran to her suite and started banging on the door," the actress wrote in From Here to the Great Unknown.

"I already knew, clear as day, in those moments banging on her door, that any time I got with her after what was about to happen would be a gift. I couldn't imagine her living without my brother."

During a TV special with Oprah Winfrey, Keough explained that when her brother died, she had thought it would be "the end" of her mum.

"They were as close as Elvis was with his mother, and I just couldn't imagine a world where she would make it without him," Riley told the TV host.
