Dave Chappelle won best comedy album at the 2025 Grammys on Sunday, his third win in a row in the category and sixth win overall.

The Recording Academy presented the comedy album trophy during the premiere ceremony, which took place before the televised event later on Sunday. Chappelle was not present to accept the trophy.

Chappelle won for The Dreamer, his 2023 New Year’s Eve Netflix special. The new hour was Chappelle’s seventh for the streamer, and his first since the ultra-controversial 2021 special The Closer, which brought the comedian under fire for jokes about the transgender community.

In The Dreamer, Chappelle still targeted several different marginalized groups, including trans people and the disabled. “I love punching down!” he said at one point in the special.

Chappelle’s win beat Ricky Gervais’ Armageddon, Jim Gaffigan’s The Prisoner, Nikki Glaser’s Someday You’ll Die and Trevor Noah’s Where Was I.

Noah returns as host for Sunday evening’s main ceremony, his fifth consecutive time emceeing the ceremony. Other early 2025 Grammy winners included Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, who took home their first Grammys, and Beyoncé, who won her first country Grammy. Just after Chappelle’s win, Jimmy Carter won best audiobook, breaking a record for number of wins in the category. The former president’s grandson, Jason Carter, accepted the trophy on behalf of his late grandfather, who died at the age of 100 in December.

The 67th annual Grammys will air live Sunday on CBS starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The Grammys premiere ceremony took place starting at 12:30 p.m. PT from the Peacock Theater and streamed live on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel.
