Director responds after Quentin Tarantino explained why he refused to watch his hugely popular movies

The director behind a pair of blockbuster movies that Quentin Tarantino refuses to watch has responded to his admission.

Tarantino is one of the most popular and successful directors in the film industry, with classics such as Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds to his name.

However, the 61-year-old is not shy of sharing his thoughts when asked about aspects of the industry, which has resulted in controversy in the past.

The American director has previously admitted that he'd never watch the fourth Toy Story film, calling the third 'magnificent' and 'one of the best movies I've ever seen' - the highest praise possible.

But there are two other titles that he specifically mentioned, which he doesn't ever plan on watching.

These films are the two that have been released so far in the Dune trilogy, directed by Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.

But the critically acclaimed and Oscar-winning film series doesn't seem to take Tarantino's fancy for one reason.

Speaking on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, he was asked if he had seen the films, and mentioned that seeing the 1984 adaption of the novel, which was a flop, was enough for him.

“I saw [David Lynch’s] Dune a couple of times. I don’t need to see that story again. I don’t need to see spice worms," he explained.

"I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘spice’ so dramatically."

He added he also won't want Netflix's Ripley or Disney+'s Shōgun, since he's already seen the previous versions.

But now, Villenueve has responded, when asked about Tarantino's statement by a journalist at the Concordia Theatre in Montreal, where he spoke to film students before answering questions.

According to the Montreal Gazette, Villenueve was on stage for a couple of hours, not shying away from any questions and showed a good sense of humour.

Though when asked about the comments about Dune, he simply said: “I don’t care,” before the room erupted into laughter.

He further explained: “It’s true. I agree with him that I don’t like this idea of recycling and bringing back old ideas.

“But where I disagree is that what I did was not a remake. It’s an adaptation of the book. I see this as an original.”

The 57-year-old then joked: “But we are very different human beings.”

With a third film on the way, and the first two having grossed over $1 billion worldwide, it's understandable that Villeneuve doesn't really care about what Tarantino, or anyone else for that matter, thinks about his Dune films.
