Emily in Paris star Lucas Bravo has stunned fans after admitting he might quit the hit Netflix show as it's “not fun anymore”.
The French actor, 36, had previously spoken candidly about wanting his character, hot chef Gabriel, to have some “growth” in season five of the hit romantic comedy, and now, he’s suggested he could quit Emily in Paris over his frustrations. Gabriel plays the love interest of Lily Collins’ protagonist Emily, and while fans are vocal about the future of the on-screen couple, Lucas could shatter their hopes that Gabriel and Emily will live happily ever after.
In a new interview, Lucas said the “sexy chef” was fun for him to play in season one of the show, but as time went on, he “grew apart” from the character “because of the direction they make him take”. He told IndieWire: “They made him kind of unaware of his surroundings. Of the dynamic, always victimising and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone.”

He also noted that his contract with Netflix ended with season four, so he’s not obliged to reprise his role as Gabriel, even though the series was renewed for another season last month. Lucas took aim at the writers, and revealed he was annoyed he wasn’t able to have any input, or control, over his character. “I tried for seasons to bring nuances but we don’t have much liberty on set. We cannot change a word or an emotion,” he explained.

I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self,” Lucas admitted. “Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.”
Lucas shared his frustrations with the creativity of the hit show, as he alleged showrunner Darren Star was “very precious about not changing the recipe” of Emily in Paris, and won’t consider anything dramatic happening that could lose viewers. “Anything that could go off road is carefully taken back. It’s a lot of souffles. Pregnant? No, fake positive. Going to Rome? No, coming back. There are a lot of things like that. There is a lack of risk,” Lucas fumed.
He acknowledged his comments were harsh, but insisted he was being fair about his character’s development, because he wasn’t having fun filming the show anymore. “I’m not going to lie, I’ve been frustrated with the direction my character is taking. But we’ll see where it goes. The show is not over,” he teased.
