First look at Gavin and Stacey Christmas special gives hint over huge mystery

6 hours ago 5

Ahead of the release of the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special a few details have been teased about what has been billed as the 'very last time' we're going to spend time with the Shipman and West families.

Despite a spot of subterfuge over whether or not we'd be getting any Gavin and Stacey this year it was later officially confirmed that we would indeed have one final festive trip to catch up on where everyone was.

Last we left off in the 2019 special, Nessa (Ruth Jones) had poured her heart out to Smithy (James Corden), produced a ring and got down on one knee, and what happened next won't be revealed until this Christmas.

Now a first look at Gavin and Stacey: The Finale has brought everyone up to speed on what the families are doing five years on.

The BBC also teased that we might finally get to find out what happened on that mysterious fishing trip that Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Jason (Robert Wilfort) went on.

"It’s five years since we left Nessa down on one knee declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her. And a lot has happened since then," they said in a statement.

"In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely. Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.

"Over in Billericay Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.

"Join us on the journey to Barry and Billericay as we catch up with the Shipmans and the Wests for the very last time and maybe find out what exactly did happen on that fishing trip."

It sounds like it'll be Christmas round at Mick and Pam's this year, we should get to know what happened between Smithy and Nessa but above all stands the mystery of the fishing trip.

As Doris put it, 'that bloody fishing trip Bryn, when's it gonna end, eh?' and it sounds like we might finally get an ending to it at last.

For years the mystery of what happened between Jason and Bryn has been causing tension and confusion, while Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) was 'sickened by the whole thing' when he was told about it, and he later said it was a 'physical impossibility that defies gravity'.

We don't know what went on during the fishing trip, but Jason and Bryn insist that whatever it was is 'perfectly legal in this country'.

Bryn was at one point going to confess all, but then the kids rushed in and interrupted him.

On the other hand, perhaps it's better we don't know what happened out there because leaving it up to the imagination of each Gavin and Stacey fan might be a better outcome than pulling back the curtain.

Until it's something official it could be anything.

Gavin and Stacey: The Finale will be shown on BBC One on Christmas Day, and will also be available on iPlayer.
