A Brazilian TV actress was heavily criticised after revealing she bought her 12-year-old daughter a vibrator for her birthday.

Claudia Raia, 58, made an appearance on live television when she made the shocking confession of gifting the sex toy to her daughter Sophia when she turned 12 years old. She made the comment when discussing how she was able to keep her high sex drive while entering menopause.

While on Goucha, a Portuguese TV programme, she promoted her play Menopausia and discussed the importance of sex toys. She said: "Toys help a lot. Today, vibrators are considered toys that require a doctor’s prescription." The actress and singer then said of her gift to her daughter: "When she turned 12, I gave her a vibrator."

Claudia revealed what she said to her daughter after gifting her the sex toy. She said to Sophia: "Go investigate yourself, you'll find out what you like.” Her honesty was met with backlash from the public, who went on social media and slammed her parenting style.

One angered social media user said Claudia didn’t “respect the innocence of children," while another said the present was "ridiculour and unnecessary". Another X/Twitter user called the soap star "very clueless" while one upset person added: "In the past mothers gave dolls."

"It’s best to talk, explain, and guide girls. There’s no need to give them a vibrator," another commented. Responding to the backlash, Claudia took to her Instagram page to claim her comments were misinterpreted, saying: "I have always encouraged open dialogue with my children about all topics, including sex education, in a respectful and age-appropriate manner. As a mother, my priority has always been to create an environment of trust and information.

“However, I understand that each family has its own way of dealing with these issues, and I respect that.” Along with her daughter Sophie, born in 2003, she has two other children: Enzo (born in 1997) and Luca (born in 2023). When she became pregnant at 55, she was hit with backlash from social media users.

“I was massacred on social media. Lots of applause, affection, lots of love, but from women it’s deeper than anything,” she said. “I was in a place where women were 50 years old, on the couch, resting, their children grown up, and I had a child. They told me that I was old enough to be a grandmother, that my body would never come back. I’m not part of that generation that looks at comments, I don’t even have time for that, the people who talk to me. It affects me, but I’m not a hostage to that.”
