A Gavin & Stacey star has been rushed off stage after suffering a head injury.

Actor Mathew Horne, who plays Gavin in the hit BBC sitcom, hit his head while on stage during a West End show. He was rushed off to seek medical attention. Matthew is currently starring in a production of The Tempest at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London.

Disaster struck just ten minutes into his performance on Tuesday night and the show was halted. The actor hit his forehead on a rock on stage as part of the play where he rolled on the floor. Matthew was taken off stage for 15 minutes before he bravely continued on with his performance.

Audience members said they saw a red mark on his face. One person who was watching the play told the Sun: “Mathew’s forehead had a big, red mark on it and it looked pretty painful, even from far away in the theatre. He was clearly in pain so they stopped the show as a precautionary measure to give him a once-over.

“It was about 15 minutes before the cast eventually returned to the stage, including Mathew, but his forehead looked sore." They called the actor a "real trooper" as he managed to carry on. Gavin & Stacey fans are gearing up to see the iconic characters once more on Christmas Day.

The much-loved characters will reunite on Christmas Day

It is set to be emotional for fans as creators Ruth Jones and James Corden confirmed that the show will no longer continue. During the special episode, fans will find out what happened after Nessa (Jones) proposed to Smithy (Corden) at the end of the last episode which aired five years ago.

Ahead of its release, Mathew shared: “I want to say I was nervous about reading the script, as it’s always been Ruth’s (Jones) and James’s (Corden) priority to get the script perfect in the first instance, to tell a story the right way. And I had no evidence to suggest that this final script wouldn’t adhere to those principles and be anything other than brilliant. I did have a nervous compulsion to read it immediately and my expectations were exceeded. It made me laugh, it made me cry and upon completion, I thought it was nothing short of a masterpiece. Not just in terms of an episode of Gavin And Stacey, but frankly any script I’ve ever read."

Last month, bosses shared a new image of the lead stars, Ruth, James, Matthew (Gavin) and Joanna Page (Stacey). The fan-favourite quartet recreated the first image which was released to celebrate the launch of the first ever series. Posing alongside one another, Smithy no longer looks baby faced while and now has a beard.

New storylines have been teased, with many fans hoping that they will find out what really happened on that infamous fishing trip with Uncle Bryn and Jason – which has previously been shrouded in secrecy. Since the show began in 2007, fans have been sharing their theories on the mystery fishing trip involving Uncle Bryn and his nephew Jason but what happened has never been revealed.

The highly anticipated episode will air on Christmas Day from 9pm. The Christmas special will last for 1 hr 35 minutes and finish at 10.35pm.
