Nikki Glaser says she's "not scared" of being cancelled, ahead of the Golden Globe Awards.
The 40-year-old comedian is the first woman to host the Golden Globes alone. Ricky Gervais hosted the annual awards ceremony five times between 2010 and 2020, taking brutal swipes at the stars in the audience.
Nikki, who is hosting the 82nd Golden Globes, says she's not worried about being cancelled and can't control it. The stand-up, known for her frank comedy on sex, admits she's said "dumb things" in the past and hopes such things don't come back to haunt her.
She believes that even when comics apologise for things they've said, some people accuse them of doing so only to preserve their careers. But she admits she doesn't want to be cancelled as it seems like a "pretty terrible" thing to happen to someone.
Nikki, who brutally roasted NFL legend Tom Brady, is preparing to poke fun at her long-term boyfriend at the Golden Globes. She says her TV producer beau, Chris Convy, doesn't mind her sharing intimate details of their relationship on stage as he's "very secure" - but the jokes have to be funny.
Speaking to the Mirror US, Glaser said: "I am such an open book and so many of my stories involve like, 'Oh, I was having sex the other night.' Luckily my boyfriend is very secure and he always just tells me, 'If it's funny, you can say anything you want.' And that is great.
"When it's not funny, we have some discussions where it was like 'You were just saying that to just say it.' That's where it gets dicey. And I agree," she continued. "If it's funny enough though, anything goes, I mean, that's a really nice rule to have. That's a very secure person," she added.
Glaser says she doesn't try to offend audiences with her jokes and has no problem apologising if she goes too far, and whether or not people accept her apology is on them. She said: "But if I ever did something worth canceling and someone was that hurt that I said a joke, I mean, I would inform myself about it.
"I'm just a comedian. I don't claim to have anything tight. So I say a lot of dumb things sometimes and I hope that people forgive." Discussing cancel culture, she said: "I think a lot of times with cancel culture, as soon as someone apologises and does the work on themselves and comes out and says, 'I'm horrified by what I said 10 years ago,' people go, oh, you just want your career back.
"That's why you're saying that. And it's like, can't it be both? I want my career back and be horrified by how I acted.' We have to have the ability to change and to learn and to grow. And so I'm not scared of it (being cancelled) because I think it's stupid. And if it happens to me, I can't help it.
"And I can't worry about something that could happen any second. And I'll just deal with when and if it happens, but I really don't want to be cancelled. It seems like a pretty terrible thing to happen to you."
The 82nd Annual Golden Globes will feature presenters including Andrew Garfield, Anthony Mackie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ariana DeBose, Colin Farrell, Colman Domingo, Demi Moore, Dwayne Johnson, Édgar Ramírez, Elton John, Gal Gadot, Glenn Close, Margaret Qualley, Melissa McCarthy, Michael Keaton, Michelle Yeoh, Miles Teller, Mindy Kaling, Salma Hayek Pinault, Sharon Stone, Vin Diesel, Viola Davis, and Zoë Kravitz.
