Jennifer Lopez says women 'hide' struggles from their children in new film role

Actress Jennifer Lopez has opened up about the hidden struggles women keep from their kids while discussing her role in a new film at a London screening.

The 55 year old superstar graced the Cineworld Leicester Square for the biopic 'Unstoppable', produced by Artists Equity – the company co-owned by her ex, Ben Affleck, and his pal Matt Damon.

In the film, Lopez portrays Judy Robles, who became a teen mum to Anthony Robles (played by Jharrel Jerome), a one-legged wrestling champion and author. Speaking at a Q&A session, JLo revealed that initially, she saw Judy as a "smaller character" but after meeting her, she understood the story was as much about Judy as it was about Anthony.

She described the film as "very relatable" for women in "challenging relationships". "I think a lot of women have gone through that, and she (Judy) and I talked a lot," Lopez said. "We got to know each other. I wanted her to really feel safe with me (while) sharing details, because as great as the story is, without the struggle, that’s what makes it great."

She also highlighted how mothers often shield their children from their own battles, saying: "There was a whole different story there that she was living, that you hide from your children, you protect your children from that. But I thought it was really, really important to not just play the mom who the kids knew, but to play the woman who raised these children and where she found her own strength and her own struggles, and was able to put that and make sure her children... benefited from her life experience, as opposed to being brought down by the things that she was struggling with.

"And for me, it was just a full, beautiful character to play, and I really enjoyed kind of losing myself and... I didn’t want anybody to see me in it. I wanted them to see Judy in it." Lopez beamed on the red carpet for the screening, wearing a white fluffy jacket and halter neck dress, paired with a matching white clutch bag.

Prior to the US election day on Tuesday, Lopez publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for president over Donald Trump, and on election day, she shared an Instagram story listing the opening hours for polling stations in each state. The singer and actress, who has Puerto Rican heritage, recently defended the US territory after a comedian made disparaging remarks about it at a rally for Mr Trump.

She stated that Tony Hinchcliffe's comments about Puerto Rico serve as a reminder of who former president Mr Trump "really is and how he really feels", adding: "It wasn’t just Puerto Ricans that were offended that day, it was every Latino in this country, it was humanity and anyone of decent character."

Lopez had previously made an appearance at the premiere of Unstoppable at the Toronto International Film Festival, following her filing for divorce. This move put an end to months of speculation about her marital status with 52 year old Affleck. The couple had tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony in July 2022, after reigniting their relationship which had famously ended in 2004.
