Joe Lycett opened up about people’s misconceptions of his sexuality while speaking about his family's new arrival on a parenting podcast.

Comedian Joe, 36, is the proud father of a young son, and announced his birth in October. Many fans were surprised to hear the news that he’d welcomed a new family member with his partner - whom he refers to as “Denise” while keeping her real identity private - after having falsely assumed that Joe was gay.

Joe joined up with fellow comedians Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe on their podcast Parenting Hell, and spoke about the incorrect assumptions about his sexuality while also touching upon his new life as a dad.

Opening the podcast, Rob immediately made a joke about the reaction to Joe’s baby announcement, with many fans opting to believe that it was another of the Brummie star’s intricate jokes.

“It’s the first time we’ve had a parent on the show that when they announced that they were having a child everyone thought it was a prank, so that will be interesting,” Rob quipped.

After a conversation about how his life had changed since welcoming a baby, Joe then addressed people’s presumptions that the announcement was a joke and their willingness to label him as gay.

“I get it, you know… as you say, it’s unexpected for me to have a baby because lots of people think of me as the sort of gay bloke off the telly, essentially,” he said.

“But I have, in most of the times that I’ve talked about my sexuality, been open about the fact that I’m not gay. But I do think that’s interesting, I think there’s loads of good stand up in it, but it’s just kind of caught me off guard…”

Joe has previously clarified that he’s pansexual, but sometimes struggled to explain what the term meant to outsiders. Referring to his past comments about his sexuality, he and the podcast hosts also looked back to his past stand-up routines, in which he’d refer to himself as bisexual.

“I’ve known you for nearly 15 years now. When we started together, your opening joke would be, I think it was bisexual you’d say-” Rob began.

“Yeah, you’re all at risk!” Joe joked, adding, “But yeah, so that’s it. I have sort of talked about it. Of course, not everyone needs to know everything about me, but it’s just so interesting.

“People who don’t know that much about me have seen maybe a quick clip, just go, ‘gay bloke.’ And when they see that other bit of information, they go, ‘Oh don’t know! You know, robot’s going off-course.’”

Despite some inappropriate comments from trolls and fans alike about Joe’s baby or sexuality, the comedian gushed over fatherhood with his famed wittiness and several hilarious comments.

The star also thanked his supporters earlier this week, with a heartfelt message to fans in an email newsletter. "I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has been so lovely about my news (you may have seen on instagram or in the press that I have just welcomed a son).... I’m finding fatherhood to be a total delight,” he wrote.
