Joker: Folie A Deux to give the film its proper title is the sequel to the blockbuster film The Joker film.
The Joker 2 is “the worst film ever made” according to one of the movie’s own actors, who claims people who worked on the film knew it would be a flop.
Joker: Folie A Deux, to give the film its proper title, is the sequel to the blockbuster film The Joker. Both starred Joaquin Phoenix as the demented comic book psychotic clown but the second movie in the reboot of the Batman nemesis character has done particularly badly thanks to audience word of mouth which has largely consisted of, “Don’t go to see it”.
Now comedian and actor Tim Dillon, 39, has revealed he didn’t think much of the film as it was being made and couldn’t see much about the movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, that would resonate with the public.
Speaking on the Joe Rogan podcast, he said: "I was in ‘Joker 2,’ which just came out. It's the worst film that has ever been made.” the New York native admitted.
"I heard it was so bad," Rogan admitted.
"It's actually not ‘so bad,’ it's the worst film ever made," Dillon insisted. "I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people and this sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage. Nihilism!’ You know, all these think pieces. And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing, to a point where it’s insane."
The original Joker film, released in 2019, raked in more than a billion US dollars at the box office. Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor as well as a BAFTA and Golden Globe for the lead role. The highly anticipated sequel was released in early October, but grossed less than a fifth of that.
The 2019 film, directed by Todd Phillips, was criticised ahead of and after its release due to the romanticisation of evil and the celebration of a mass-murderer in Phoenix's character by critics. But few could argue that it was one of the films of the year.
Joining the star-studded lead pair of Phoenix and Gaga in the second film was an impressive cast including Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey and Bill Smitrovich. Phillips, known for his work on the first Joker film had also directed The Hangover series of films and Starsky and Hutch.
The storyline centres around Arthur Fleck, who is now confined at Arkham for his crimes as the Joker. As he wrestles with his dual identity, Arthur encounters Harleen (played by Lady Gaga), discovering not just love but also his musical side.
Asked what would motivate Phillips to make such a terrible picture, Dillon said: "Because it's hubris, number one. The idea that… people love it so much, they're gonna accept it in any version. It has no plot. We would sit there - me and these other guys, we're all dressed in these f---ing security outfits ‘cause we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them, and we'd hear this crap, and I'd go, ‘What the f--- is this?’ And they'd go, ‘This is gonna bomb, man.’ It's not even hate-watchable, that's how terrible it is."
The actor said he could sense in the cinema that the audience wasn't getting it.
"You're sitting there and there's these people, you know, in the theatre and they're all confused, and I'm watching their reactions and they're all like staring and everything."
Admitting the film starts out with promise, Dillon claimed its downfall is the movie's transition into a musical.
"I think they thought that this would be received differently," Dillon said. "I think they're maybe in a little bit of a bubble. All they had to do was blow some s**t up, have them escape from prison, have them do something. Get a couple scenes in the courthouse, or something. The first one was really great and if you were a fan of the first one, the second one was like, kind of, I think, insane.
"It would be like if Godfather was about like, the Corleone family going legit and apologising for the mafia. They were like, ‘Hey, I’m sorry we did all this s**t. We now have a bakery.'"
