Katy Perry has faced harsh criticism over her comeback

Katy Perry has been criticised over her recent music comeback for not being "the teenage dream anymore".

The pop star, 40, launched her seventh studio album titled 143 but failed to reach the levels of success of her early career. Unfortunately for Katy, it even became the lowest scoring album on Metacritic since 2011 when it dropped in September. Katy has racked up negative comments from fans, critics as well as coming under fire for collaborating with controversial producer Dr Luke.

Despite the backlash, Katy has kicked off her Lifetimes world tour but insiders have claimed the star might be in for a harsh reality check when she performs in the US. It has been claimed Katy has failed to see the "writing on the wall" surrounding her comeback as she has been surrounded by "yes people".

"Katy is no longer the teenage dream anymore and she needs to accept this," a source told Daily Mail. "She announced that she is bringing her 2025 tour to the US after being advised to not do the tour at all." They added: "Her album absolutely tanked, and an artist should not do a tour from a failed album that bombed."

The I Kissed A Girl hitmaker's first track Women's World flopped amid a wave of controversary. She collaborated with controversial producer Lukasz Gottwald "Dr. Luke" for the song that failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 and peaked at number 63 in it's first complete tracking week.

Back in late 2014, pop star Kesha took Gottwald to court over claims of sexual assault and battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, emotional abuse, and violation of California business practices, all spanning a decade of working together. The two settled their legal battle out of court earlier this year. While Gottwald has consistently refuted all accusations of misconduct, his association with Katy's tune hasn't sat well with her fanbase.

Some of Katy's fans tried to argue she was forced to work with Dr Luke on her new album. However, during her 2018 deposition for Kesha's lawsuit against the controversial music producer, Katy confirmed that she had only ever signed a three-album publishing deal with Dr. Luke's Kemosabe Records and that they were no longer contractually linked.

"Working with him at this moment would mean - would not be - would not be received well because of this lawsuit," she said at the time. When questioned about the possible impact on the success of a future release if she worked with Dr. Luke, Katy replied: "[People would] protest against it, a smear campaign, just 20 different narratives than the one that I am."

Katy faced fierce backlash over her performance at ITV Capital Jingle Bell Ball over the weekend. She made a performance at the star-studded event where a string of huge performers took to the stage at London's O2 Arena. However, Katy's performance on the night attracted plenty of attention online and for the wrong reasons. One viewer even went as far as calling for Katy to retire. They said: ""She should retire." Another added: "Fun popstar but sounds terrible." Someone else commented: "Weak vocals huh."
