Liam Payne’s dad, Geoff Payne, is willing to help authorities amid the investigation into his son’s death, In Touch can confirm.
The Argentine Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Geoff has spoken with case prosecutor Dr. Andres Esteban Madrea about “his desire to investigate and to know what happened” with Liam, according to Us Weekly.
Meanwhile, In Touch has learned that Geoff is willing to share everything he knows about Liam’s life that could potentially help authorities with the investigation.
After arriving in arriving in Argentina following Liam’s death at the age of 31 on October 16, Geoff is expected to remain in the South American country under “dynamic police custody until the end of the judicial proceedings,” the prosecutor’s office told Us Weekly.
Madrea added that the office is determined to preserve “the privacy of the family of the former member of the band One Direction.”
“Everything that arises within the framework of the investigation will first be informed to the family,” the department said in a statement to the outlet on Tuesday, October 22. “And given the high public exposure that the musician had, the communication will be limited to the institutional channels of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.”
Officials have also confirmed that forensic tests will be completed amid the investigation. Authorities are currently analyzing mobile phones, computers, photographs and CCTV footage to learn more about Liam’s death, and it’s expected that the investigation will last for an extended period of time.
Liam died after he fell three stories at the Casa Sur hotel in Buenos Aires. His autopsy was released five days later on Monday, October 21, and it was revealed that he had pink cocaine, cocaine, benzodiazepine and crack in his system at the time of his death.
Local authorities confirmed that he “jumped from the balcony of his room,” according to the Associated Press. A 911 call made by a hotel employee later revealed that an unnamed guest had “overindulged on drugs and alcohol.” The staff member said he was “breaking the whole room” when conscious, and asked that police arrive “urgently” because the guest appeared to be at risk.
“The guest is in a room that has a balcony and, well, we are a little afraid that he might do something life-threatening,” the employee said on the call.
On October 22, In Touch learned that Liam’s death may not have been intentional because he had taken high-purity drugs. The specific substances he took may have had a different effect on him than the drugs he had used in the past, and potentially could have played a major factor in his death.
Forensic toxicologist Fernando Cardini explained that being in a different country could have triggered the “substance-induced,” “semi-conscious” or “unconscious” state that Liam was in before he fell three stories.
Cardini told Argentine TV channel Todo Noticias’ that “a very complicated mix of chemical substances” was found in Liam’s system. “There was a situation in which a person consumed drugs, but being in a different country, perhaps it didn’t have the same concentration of drug that he bought,” he explained. “Perhaps that got the better of him.”
