Man who wanted to quit smoking went to extreme lengths to stop

2 weeks ago 2

Trying to kick your smoking habit? Ever thought about locking your head in a cage like this man from Turkey? No, me neither.

Whether you’ve tried tirelessly for years to stop smoking, or you’ve debated it but really want to make sure you’ll never smoke again, placing your head inside of a cage sounds like an extreme like no other.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills approximately eight million people every single year.

Out of those deaths, seven million are tobacco smokers, while 1.2 million deaths are caused by non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

Out of desperation, Ibrahim Yucel did what most other people would never even consider.

He locked his head inside of a circular cage and gave his wife the only key.

It all happened in 2013, in the town of Kütahya.

According to Ary News, he settled on his method because his father died of lung cancer after spending his years smoking.

Because Yucel was also a smoker, who had been smoking two packs of cigarettes daily for over twenty years, he was completely hooked on his habit and couldn’t stop.

So, he decided to try something out of the box.

By putting his head inside of one.

Having seen motorcycle helmets, he decided that these would be a great structure for his plan.

That’s when he took 130 feet of copper wire and fashioned himself the cage, fitted with a lock.

After finishing the creation, he then locked his own head inside and gave the key to his wife so that the only way he could be freed was for mealtimes.

Because of the tiny gaps between the copper wire, he was able to drink water out of a straw but could not fit a cigarette in the same space, making it impossible for him to smoke.

However, nobody quite knows whether his contraption worked, as there is virtually no coverage on Yucel and his family after he initially began wearing the helmet.

People on Reddit got hold of the story and had some pretty funny opinions about what they would do with the cage, and whether or not it was a good idea for the man to kick his habit once and for all.

One person stated: “You know how they tell children not to put plastic bags over their heads? Big Tobacco propaganda.”

Another joked: “The nose itch would get me...”

Someone else gave him tips to carry on smoking with the device in place: “He can stick a straw in a cigarette butt and smoke from the straw.”

One user was baffled: “There HAS TO BE a better way of doing this.”

Lastly, someone joked: “Hangs around the smoking area asking people to breathe on him.”

With so many tools out there to stop smoking, from patches, inhalers, gum and vapes, maybe this is the one tool that the market is really missing out on to finally curb the habit.
