Mary J. Blige, Zendaya, And More Shine On Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Red Carpet

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony went down on Saturday night (Oct. 19) live from Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse with a celebration for the ages. Fans who couldn’t attend the commemoration in person could dance, cry, and celebrate music with a live stream from Disney+.

And the show had it all, from surprise performances that included Busta Rhymes, Common, and even Dua Lipa making her best Cher impression to presenters like Zendaya, who said a couple of words regarding the “Goddess of Pop.”

“This fierce woman is a hero, a true artist and just about as authentically rock ‘n’ roll as you can get,” Z told the crowd as she introduced Cher to the stage.

A Tribe Called Quest and Mary J. Blige both got their just due with the help of some of their legendary friends. Dave Chappelle took the stage to present ATCQ with their induction into music immortality, recalling how four Black boys from New York City marked a permanent shift in music and Hip-Hop history.

“The proverb said that the best meal you can cook is made with ingredients that you already have. And this proverb reminds me of Hip-Hop, and this proverb reminds me, in particular, of Tribe because Tribe was born out of friendship,” Dave expressed. “Being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is not something that a Black kid in New York in 1985 would ever even imagine to dream of. And I don’t believe that was ever the point of A Tribe Called Quest.”

“They met on a train. They met at school. They played basketball together. They play around and run with each other. They just use what they had. And the first thing they had was each other, as friends. The next thing they had was their parents’ records. Hip-Hop took what came before it and made it strikingly innovative and new and Tribe Called Quest incorporated jazz and soul in a way that Hip-Hop had never seen before them.”
