Taylor Swift has established quite a reputation for mining her dating experiences for song material, dropping major hints about her subjects in the process. So when her 31-song album The Tortured Poets Department dropped in April 2024, amid a public breakup with Joe Alwyn, a short-lived tryst with the 1975 frontman Matty Healy, and a budding romance with Travis Kelce, there was a whole lot of material to dissect and dots to connect.
One song in particular seemed to recall a whirlwind relationship with Healy, who cemented himself as a key player in Swiftie lore after their fling—and all its public backlash. Titled ‘Guilty as Sin’, its lyrics paint a picture of a love of the forbidden kind, with an elusive figure that seems to play mind games.
It starts with a reference to another song.
“Drowning in the Blue Nile / He sent me ‘Downtown Lights’ / I hadn’t heard it in a while,” it begins, which many interpreted as a romantic—albeit vague—gesture.
Then, confirming many fan theories, Healy took it upon himself to share a cover of ‘The Downtown Lights’ by 80s band The Blue Nile to his Instagram Stories.
“If you don’t know this cover, you are welcome,” he wrote alongside a photo of Annie Lennox’s cover. Naturally, fans were quick to lose their minds about the supposed admission.
Now, the singer ostensibly claims the lyrics once again. Only, this time, he twists the knife with a perceived dig at Swift’s fans. Upon his return to the platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Healy dropped a loaded comment about the song referenced in ‘Guilty as Sin’.
“I think I sent my last Uber driver ‘The Downtown Lights’,” he wrote. “He didn’t think it was ‘coded’. He is employed tho.”
Swifties didn’t take too kindly to the implication that anyone who deemed the (obviously romantic) song as meaningful suffered from a surplus of time on their hands. Frankly, with lyrics like “Sometimes I walk away / When all I really wanna do / Is love and hold you right” and “Nobody loves you this way”, we’d have to disagree.
After first meeting in 2014, Swift and Healy briefly dated in 2023 following her breakup with Joe Alwyn.
Their romance was fraught with public scrutiny, with many of Healy‘s past blunders (some more objectively condemnable than others) resurfacing at the time.
Though short, their time together clearly inspired some big feelings for Swift, who now finds herself with Travis Kelce. Meanwhile, Healy is engaged to Gabbriette Bechtel.
