Matty Healy says he won’t be writing music about “casual” relationships, after dating Taylor Swift.

“I just naturally make melodically quite relatable music,” the 35-year old singer said during an appearance on the “Doomscroll Podcast” on Tuesday, October 22. “So, my next record will be, hopefully, an enjoyable 1975 record, objectively. And it will be about what my records are always about — love, sex, death, communication, all the big things.”

Matty’s life was put under a microscope last year, after he had a whirlwind relationship with Taylor, one after it was reported that she had split from boyfriend of six years, Joe Alwyn.

They broke up less than two months later, and both artists quickly moved on, as Matty is currently engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel while Taylor is dating NFL star Travis Kelce. However, their brief relationship seemingly inspired many of the tracks from Taylor’s 2024 album, The Tortured Poet’s Department.

Matty acknowledged in Tuesday’s interview that he “became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons,” although he doesn’t think he’ll be going on tour whenever his band’s next album is ready.

“I used to write about relationships a lot more and stuff like that,” he continued. “Maybe I’d be inclined to kind of reflect on my experience as a person, do you know what I mean? And more as an artist, but honestly, I would kind of just be lying.”

He explained, “You know, if I made a record about all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons or whatever it may be that I’ve kind of become known for just because I was famous, I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from. I’m just not interested in it. … The idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me that, by the time I put it out, is gonna be, like, two years old — I see people doing that, as well, and it’s just not interesting.”

The 1975 frontman also said he’d rather create “interesting art pop” about “subjects that I’m really interested in,” rather than his personal life.

“I’m sure there’ll be some kind of love songs on there. I think that yeah, I’m not in the world of, ‘Did you see what happened? Here’s my version of it,’ kind of thing,” he explained. “I think that’s for other artists to do.”
