Warner Bros. Discovery‘s streaming service Max is taking a cue from Spotify, rolling out a personalized year-end recap for users that it is calling Max Rewind.
Max Rewind is meant to be shareable to social platforms, and will include a look back at trends on the platform and the personal watch history of the user, including top brands and genres, viewing patterns, avatars and more. Each user will also be assigned a “character” based on their watch history, with curated viewing recommendations for each character (i.e. “Trendsetter”).
Max users will receive a notification Thursday alerting them to the recap feature. The feature was tested among a small group of users last year, but 2024 will be the first time it rolls out to the entire subscriber base.
While the idea is a unique one for a streaming video service, there is precedent for such a product. Spotify has for a number of years found success with Spotify Wrapped, which combined platform trends with personalized listening habits in a year-end release for its users. Users of Spotify frequently look forward to the Wrapped release.
It makes sense that video platforms like Max would want to join the party.
