New York Mayor Eric Adams appointed Jessica Tisch, who currently is the city's sanitation commissioner, to lead the New York City Police Department.
Tisch, who has never served as a police officer, worked in a civil role within the department for over a decade. She will be the second-ever woman to serve as the NYPD commissioner. The first was Keechant Sewell, who was also appointed by Adams in 2022.
"I've seen firsthand the profound nobility of the policing profession, and I was proud to work shoulder-to-shoulder with both uniform members and civilians to propel the NYPD into the next century of technological advancement," Tisch said. "I thank Mayor Adams for the tremendous honor to now lead the NYPD, and I understand the solemnity of this great responsibility."
Edward Caban had resigned as the police commissioner in September, a week after his phone was seized as part of a federal investigation that affected many within Adam's inner circle. Caban was in charge of the department for 15 months.
Jessica Tisch's work as sanitation chief
