Megan McKenna has announced she is turning away from social media in order to focus on her health.

The 32-year-old former The Only Way Is Essex firecracker has shared that she has developed a painful condition that is associated with breastfeeding. The mum-of-one welcomed her baby son, Landon, who she shares with footballer fiancé Oliver Burke in October 2024.

Taking to social media on Saturday, the reality star explained that she has been struck with a painful condition on her breasts. She explained that she initially contracted mastitis - a painful condition that causes the breast to becomes swollen and hot and is often linked to breastfeeding.

Unfortunately for Megan, this then turned into an even more painful condition and she is now trying to get back to full strength with the help of medication. Sharing her news in an Instagram Stories post, the TV star wrote: "Boob update. I have mastitis but its gone passed that stage and has turned into an abscess."

She continued: "I've been so ill and out of bed the past two days. They tried to drain it today but it didn't work so going back Monday to try and drain again. For now I'm on strong antibiotics. Let's hope it clears." She added a crying-face emoji to emphasise her pain and discomfort.

Explaining her need to step away from social media, she added: "Will be off socials for a few days as I'm resting and trying to get better. So annoying because I really felt like I was getting my mojo back with mum life and cooking and general plans. What can you do ey, Love you all."

Mastitis is described by the NHS as: "when your breast becomes swollen, hot and painful. It is most common in breastfeeding women and does not usually need medical treatment." They advise mothers that the condition can come on suddenly and may only affect one boob.

Signs to look out for include a swollen area on the breast that is hot and painful to the touch, a red patch or wedge-shaped breast lump, a persistent burning feeling in the breast, and also any discharge from the nipple - particularly if this contains blood. They warn that flu-like symptoms, such as aches, a high temperature, chills and tiredness, can also accompany the condition.

It is advised to seek medical help if symptoms do not improve 12 to 24 hours after treating it at home, or 48 hours after taking antibiotics, or if you get mastitis and you are not breastfeeding. Megan's update comes days after she proudly showed off her postpartum body in a candid Instagram post.

The reality star posed for a mirror selfie in a grey bra and black pants while holding her little boy, and proudly declared she was: "out the other end of the sore nipples". She confessed she had struggled with the impact breastfeeding was having on her body.

Megan has been providing regular updates to fans as she continues her motherhood journey - and revealed the pain she suffered from breastfeeding not long after Landon arrived. She told social media followers: "The first days latch wasn’t right and caused some nipple damage so it’s taking some time to get them back healthy. I’m fighting through the razor blades and it’s easing off by the day. He slept so much better last night, been sick a few times and loves his daddy so much he’s the best winder about."

She later added: "Thank you to every single person who has messaged commented and sent there love to us and Landon. I feel so overwhelmed by your words. I’m recovering slowly, the swelling isn’t great and my feet look like shrek. But it’s all part of it."
