Meghan Markle's Suits co-star makes joke about duchess in new TV show after calling her 'insensitive'

Meghan Markle's former Suits co-star has made a joke about the Duchess of Sussex in his new TV show.

Wendell Pierce, 60, who plays the role of Meghan's father in the hit legal drama, has a new on-screen role as Captain Charles Wallace Wagner in the Chicago-based CBS police drama Elsbeth.

In the latest episode, which aired yesterday evening on January 30, Wagner instructs Elsbeth to look into a homicide.

In an amusing nod to his former co-star, Meghan, he explains: "In the meantime, I need you on a case. A young man, Cole Campbell, was found deceased on the highway. His car ran off the road.

"The last place he was seeing was some fancy spa where celebrities and the royals go to. The global press was already trying to frame Meghan Markle, and she wasn't even there!'"

Pierce recently revealed he is still in contact with Meghan at the 2024 Tony Awards in New York. In an interview with PEOPLE magazine, the star revealed he met up with Harry and Meghan last year.

He told the publication: 'When [Meghan] came into town, she got an award last year, had a chance to say hello and wish she and Prince Harry well and wish the children well.

"They look very much in love and were very happy, so that's the most important thing."

Although Wendell did not specify when he caught up with the Sussexes, the couple were in New York back in May 2023 to accept Meghan's 'Women of Vision' award.

Wendell also told E! News about their catch up, saying: "It was great to see them because there's this public persona, and then it's the two that I know."

However, it seems Meghan has not remained as friendly with all of her Suits co-stars as the other leading cast members revealed they "don't have her number" anymore.

Back in January 2023, Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty, Patrick J. Adams and Gina Torres reunited on the Golden Globes red carpet which sparked rumours of a show reboot.

When asked if any of them had been in contact with Meghan, Gina, who played Jessica Pearson in Suits, confirmed they no longer have a direct way of contacting the duchess.

An interviewer asked: "Who texted Meghan and said "you've gotta come to the Golden Globes, Meghan Markle".' Gina replied: 'We don't have her number. We just don't so. She'll see. She'll watch. She'll be happy that we're here.'

Meghan was unable to make the awards ceremony due to a "previous commitment."

However, they were all invited to her royal fairytale wedding to Prince Harry ion Windsor back in May 2018 which they all attended. Wendell Pierce was also invited but was 'unable' to make an appearance.

Meghan Markle's friend, US actor Patrick J. Adams and wife Troian Bellisario arrive for the wedding ceremony of Britain's Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and US actress Meghan Markle at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, in Windsor, on May 19, 2018

Speaking to E! News last year, Wendell revealed the advice he gave to Meghan after she quit Suits and her career as an actress to move to the UK.

Recalling their last day on set together, Wendell explained: "I said, "Meghan, your life is going to be a whirlwind. You're going to be in this bubble. I just want you to remember that no matter what happens, you always have friends. And I hope you count me in that number."

However, Wendell has admitted he has not always been a fan of all of Meghan's choices. He publicly criticised the Sussexes' for their Oprah Winfrey interview back in March 2021 which came when the world was in the 'throes of death' during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Giving his opinion on the infamous interview, he told radio station LBC: "Today 3,000 people are going to die in America from COVID. A couple of hundred people are going to die, even this hour, in the UK.'

"It was quite insensitive and offensive that we are all complicit in this sort of palace… gossip in the midst of so much death. I think it is insignificant."

When asked who he was directly criticising, he said "everyone" including Oprah, US network CBS, ITV, Prince Harry and Meghan, and the Palace.

It seems Meghan has potentially learned from the past situation as she recently made the tough decision to postpone her own upcoming TV show, With love, Meghan until March in light of the LA fires.

The eight-part Netflix series will now be released on March 4 2025 instead.
