Miranda Hart explained that while she would have been a good mum, she never felt an "overwhelming desire" for children and instead chose to focus on her career.

Miranda Hart has shared intriguing insight into her views on marriage and traditional family life.

The comedian and actress expressed she always thought marrying later in life would suit her better and never felt an intense maternal desire to have children.

The 51-year-old explained her role in television shows such as BBC One’s Call the Midwife exposed her to more women choosing to focus on their careers over starting a family.

Speaking to host Elizabeth Day on her podcast How to Fail, she revealed she thought she “would have been a good mum”, but felt her “energy” was meant to go elsewhere.

Hart explained the “desire” to have children just “never happened” for her.

“I had this odd flicker of thinking I would make a good mum and occasional flickers of sadness that I can’t impart what I’ve learnt, or I can’t share something, or just experience what that’s like.

“That was just flickers of intrigue, rather than an overwhelming maternal desire for children.”

She added: “I didn’t even consider going down the route. I always thought I’m going to be quite happy without kids.

“Maybe it was just never meant to be .”

Reflecting on some of her previous work, Hart recalled discussing the prospect of children with some of the female crew members working on Call the Midwife.

“I can remember on the set of Call the Midwife these fantastic costume and make-up ladies and I noticed that quite a lot of them hadn’t had children. I asked them about that and they said ‘I feel so fulfilled in who I am and role as being godmother or a step mother or investing in my work and my friendships’.

“I thought, yeah, I’m so lucky that I never felt that pressure or that lack. We all have a purpose and we’re all uniquely wired and maybe I wasn’t meant to have children, that’s not where my energy was meant to go.”

Earlier this month, Hart made the shock announcement that she had tied the knot with her long term partner Richard Fairs.

The couple met during lockdown in 2020 and Fairs later proposed to Hart at Kew Gardens.
