The infant daughter of Washington Nationals infielder/designated hitter Andrés Chaparro has passed away, according to an Instagram post in Spanish from the Cárdenas Sports Media agency.
"We join in the pain and mourning of our friend @ch_andres07 and the entire Chaparro Márquez family over the unfortunate death of their little daughter Gio Andrea," the post read. "May God give you comfort and strength to endure such a difficult time."
Chaparro, 25, made his major league debut with Washington this season and appeared in 33 games. He hit .215 with four home runs and 15 RBIs.
Chaparro is playing in the Winter League of his native Venezuela with the Águilas del Zulia in Maracaibo. The team posted its own message via the Cardenas Sports Media Instagram account in Spanish as well.
"The entire team and organization of Águilas del Zulia stands in solidarity with their teammate @ch_andres07," the post read, "with a minute of silence for the unfortunate departure of his little daughter Gio Andrea and placing his name on the cap for his return to the nest, Luis Aparicio stadium."
Chaparro replied to that post with a grey heart and crying face emoji.
