Neighbours’ Harold Bishop star reveals he has ‘aggressive’ cancer as he quits show

Neighbours star Ian Smith, who plays Harold Bishop on the show, has revealed he has an "aggressive" form of cancer.

The actor, 86, has shared his cancer diagnosis ahead of quitting the show which he has starred on for decades. Ian had been a key part of the show since 1987, but has now stepped down from the role.

Opening up today on Australian morning television, Ian shared that he first found out a few months ago, but held back from announcing the news publicly until now.

He told Ten News on Monday: "I found out a few months back that I have cancer." He went on to say he was told he has a "very aggressive non-fixable cancer".

Before adding: "And they expect me to … they expect me to die." Ian first joined the Aussie soap in 1987, making his reign add up to an impressive 37 years on the show.

Ian did leave the soap for a stint in 1991 but returned again in 1996. He then took another break in 2009 before making a come back in 2011 and 2015.

The Australian actor and soap favourite then made a permanent return to the soap in 2022 as she rejoined the programme as a series regular.

According to reports, Ian will continue to appear on-screen until at least next year but an official final episode date is yet to be determined.

Executive Producer of the soap Jason Herbison has commented saying his last appearance will be a "very emotional moment on set as we paid tribute to him and the incredible contribution he has made to the show."

A Network 10 spokesperson released in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to hear of Ian Smith's cancer diagnosis.

"A cherished member of the Neighbours family, Ian has been the heart and soul of the show since he first arrived on Ramsay Street in 1987.

"Ian has brought joy, laughter and inspiration to audiences all around the world for decades.

"Along with the cast and crew and all his fans from around the world, we will support Ian in any way we can during this difficult time."
