Beating out popular documentaries and original series, the current number one show on Netflix comes with a terrifying warning to millions of Brits.

With My Wife, My Abuser Captured on Camera and the new season of Cobra Kai still in the top ten, the TV series taking the lead spot is actually another old Channel 5 watch.

Added to Netflix earlier this week, Cold Call originally aired in the UK back in 2019 and stars the likes of Sally Lindsay, Taj Atwal and Samantha Power.

The four-part miniseries was created and written by Karyn Dougan Buckland and Mark Buckland and is described as a psychological thriller.

It follows June Clarke (Lindsay), a single mum in Manchester who is struggling to control her life with her daughter (Atwal) getting pregnant, being sacked from her carer job and her own mother passing away. Yeah, there’s a lot on her plate basically.

But in the mix of all that, she also falls victim to a cold-call fraud which causes her to lose her home.

Fuelled by rage and grief, she attempts to track down those responsible in order to seek her, messy and complex, revenge.

Each episode of Cold Call ‘explores just how far a normal woman can be stretched when a deadly threat presents itself’.

And while it’s not based on a specific true story, the creators drew on the experiences of the millions of people who are targeted by phone scams every day.

Citizen’s Advice found that around nine million people were caught out by financial scams over the past year – working out at just under one in five adults.

So, with the show serving as a warning to Brits about the danger and existence of these scams, the lead star also spoke about the story.

Lindsay told Drama Quarterly back in 2019: “What was so fascinating about the show is it is also like an education in the fact we’re hoping to show the viewer how they do it and how not to fall for it.”

Scarily, she added she didn’t really have do much reason because as soon as she started talking about it ‘everybody had a story’.

She added: “These stories came at me thick and fast. It’s almost like it’s just under the skin of society. Half the population it’s not happened to know about it and feel very vulnerable because they don’t know what to do, while the other half of the population have experienced it and they’re angry and feel June’s rage. So hopefully we’ve got a balance in that way. That’s why I find it so exciting."
