Now, the band have reunited at Liam Payne's funeral for the first time since the band split back in 2016. This includes Zayn Malik, who became the first member of the group to leave in March of 2015.
As Liam's loved ones arrived at the service for the procession, so too did many of the stars whom he worked with, including his One Direction bandmates. All four surviving members showed up to the service, each wearing a pair of sunglasses to hide their eyes as they sobbed for their good friend.
Harry Styles was the first One Direction star to arrive at the church for Liam's service. Wearing a black suit with a black tie, Harry looked despondent as he strolled to the venue, also sporting a moustache and quiffed hairstyle alongside his fellow mourners.
Fellow band member Louis Tomlinson arrived shortly afterwards, also wearing a pair of sunglasses. The star also donned a black suit and a lack tie as he tried to maintain his composure outside the venue before the procession started.
Niall Horan reached the church soon after Louis and Harry and sported a large black coat that he wore over his black suit. Eager to avoid the public eye, Niall sped his way into the church, and appeared to be particularly emotional.
Liam had been in Argentina to support his former co-star Niall as he performed to a huge arena of fans in Argentina, alongside girlfriend Kate Cassidy. Following on from the concert, Katie opted to return to the couple's home in the US, while Liam decided to stay behind and book an extended break at the CasaSur hotel where the couple had been staying.
Zayn Malik also appeared at the funeral to pay his respects, appearing to also find Liam's death hard. Despite a rocky relationship during their stint in the group, Zayn posted an emotional tribute to his bandmate upon learning of his death, wishing that the pair could have spoken more.
Following the confirmation of Liam's death, the band - who dominated charts for five years - released a joint statement, saying they were "completely devastated" to learn of their bandmate's passing. The statement added: "The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever."
A number of other stars who had worked closely with Liam were also in attendance, including Simon Cowell - who was instrumental in putting the band together during The X Factor in 2010. Liam's girlfriend Kate Cassidy also attended the ceremony, alongside other famous faces including Kimberley Walsh, Jordan North and Robbie Keane.
