The Real Housewives of New York Season 15 finale was one of the darkest moments in the franchise’s history. Brynn Whitfield and Ubah Hassan have been butting heads all season, and it came to its pre-reunion conclusion here. The RHONY ladies will never be the same again, and there is blame on both sides.
In the RHONY Season 15 finale, Brynn told the other ladies that Ubah’s snark and suggestions she slept with people to get a job was particularly hurtful, because she had told Ubah in the past about her sexual assault. When this information got back to Ubah, she had a complete meltdown.
“May Allah strike me down and kill my firstborn if I did this,” Ubah said through tears, according to Racquel Chevremont. Those are not the words of a woman who is lying. Ubah is a lot of things – I have personally called out her bratty behavior at points throughout this season – but this is not something I can fault her for. That response is one that many people would have given if accused of such cruelty. But, we must find grace for Brynn too. When sh*t gets this real, everybody involved needs care and compassion.
Brynn Whitfield’s RHONY performance was damning, but nobody can claim it wasn’t real
I’m with Jenna Lyons on this one, who expertly explains how Brynn’s highly-sexualized humor and persona can be misinterpreted. In fact, it’s now becoming pretty obvious that this behavior is a defense mechanism due to Brynn’s past.
As for the RHONY finale? It doesn’t have to be as clear cut as Brynn lied, or Ubah lied. They could both be telling their truth, in that Brynn may have shared the story while delivering a flurry of traumatic information, and Ubah simply didn’t “clock” it. We’ve seen how quickly Brynn can jump from one topic to another, so it’s not outside the realm of possibility that she did mention the sexual assault before pivoting to something else entirely.
Even if that is the case, Brynn owes Ubah a very public apology. I’m hopeful that a thoughtful and sincere one will be given at the upcoming RHONY Season 15 reunion. She crossed a line in her claims, putting Ubah in danger with her careless words.
“If I hold this grudge for her, I will never trust. She would cut my wings, so I have to forgive her for me to move on; for me to live my life,” said Ubah in a final confessional. And with those words, viewers can learn a thing or two. Do not go out there and abuse Brynn. She is a survivor of rape who is clearly continuing to struggle in dealing with her trauma.
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, [it’s that] these girls really don’t give a f*ck,” Brynn adds in her own final confessional. She is crying out for help. She’s broken, and she needs friends. But yes; she also needs to take responsibility. Ubah isn’t the only woman in this group she’s hurt, but this is the most damning example.
However, if Brynn does admit she lied, then it’s a different story altogether. Those calling her for her firing would be justified in doing so. I really hope that this isn’t the case.
The Real Housewives of New York is available to stream on Peacock.
