Prince William made a rare statement about his wife, Princess Kate Middleton, regarding how she’s faring after finishing her chemotherapy treatment.
“She’s doing really well, thanks. And hopefully, she is watching tonight. So cheering me on,” William, 42, told British reporters shortly before the Earthshot Prize awards were given out in Cape Town, South Africa. “She’s been amazing this whole year. I know she will be really keen to see tonight be a success.”
On January 17, palace officials announced that Kate, 42, had undergone a “planned abdominal surgery.” What followed were weeks of the princess being absent from the public eye, which landed her in the center of several conspiracy theories regarding her whereabouts. When a photo shared by Kate of herself, along with her and William’s three children, was determined to have been edited, the conspiracy theories went into overdrive.
However, on March 22, Kate revealed in a video that she had been diagnosed with cancer.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery. It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful,” Kate explained in her statement. “In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”
She continued, “This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK. As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.”
Kate made her first public appearance after her cancer diagnosis on June 15 for Trooping the Colour and was later seen at Wimbledon almost a month later on July 14.
On September 9, the mom of three announced that she had successfully completed her chemotherapy treatment and was on the mend.
“As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” Kate said in another emotional video. “Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.”
She continued, “Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes. I am, however, looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can. Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.”
