Boston Red Sox ownership has pledged to its fans that the team is in for a busy winter. All indications from the front office are that the time is now to spend big, and there is no more emphatic way for the Red Sox to put their money where their mouth is than by signing one of the largest free agent contracts in Major League Baseball history.
The projections for Juan Soto's contract this offseason range anywhere from $500 million to Shohei Ohtani's staggering $700 million figure. This price tag reportedly has not scared away the Red Sox to this point.
"The Toronto Blue Jays have the first meeting (with Soto) this week." ESPN's Jeff Passan tweeted on Tuesday, "The Boston Red Sox are next."
Passan would go on to say that Soto is at the top of the Red Sox's "want list," joining a growing list of MLB insiders who are emphasizing the Red Sox's interest in the 26-year-old.
The New York Post's Jon Heyman called the Red Sox "legit Soto players," and MLB Insider Robert Murray said "the Red Sox absolutely love Juan Soto."
While many fans in Boston are justifiably skeptical of the Red Sox's chances of following through on cutting a check the size needed to acquire Soto, it's far from impossible. Planning a cross-country trip in November to meet with the most sought-after free agent on the market resembles more closely the Red Sox of 20 years ago than it does the Red Sox of recent years. But while the team's behavior might be reverting to the days of old, that won't mean much to the Boston faithful until a deal is done.
