Red Sox Predicted To Pursue $11.5 Million Reliever After Carlos Estévez Whiff

The Boston Red Sox desperately need to add a closer to their roster heading into the 2025 season. But they've whiffed on both the top relievers.

First, Boston watched Tanner Scott sign a lucrative deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now, Carlos Estévez has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Kansas City Royals.

FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently predicted the Red Sox to pursue Texas Rangers free agent David Robertson. Robertson is projected to sign for $7 million this winter, per Spotrac, following a season in which he earned $11.5 million.

"The best option available for Boston with Estevez off the board is a reliever fans are awfully familiar with, David Robertson, who spent parts of nine seasons with the New York Yankees," Rotman wrote. "He might be 39 years old, but Robertson is still an extremely effective reliever.

"This past season with the Texas Rangers, the right-hander posted a 3.00 ERA in 68 appearances and 72 innings of work. His 33.4 percent strikeout rate was his highest mark in a season since 2017, as he fanned 99 batters overall. Despite his advanced age, Robertson has been consistently reliable, making at least 58 appearances with ERAs just above or just below 3.00."

Boston needs to bring in a high-leverage reliever and the former New York Yankees star could be its guy. The Red Sox might not be able to slot him in as the team's closer, but it would certainly be a solid acquisition.

Boston may need to explore the trade market to acquire a true closer heading into 2025.
