Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds has come under fire after claiming he and wife Blake Lively are working class.

The duo are both highly successful actors, with Ryan also being co-owner of Wrexham AFC alongside pal Rob McElhenney. Blake, meanwhile, has previously been labelled a nepo baby as she comes from a family of actors.

However, Ryan insists the pair, who are parents to four kids, are working class, but his controversial comment in a recent interview hasn't gone down well with some online users. His claim came as he said the duo are trying to give their kids — James, 10, Inez, eight, Betty, five, and Olin, one — a regular upbringing away from the cameras.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Deadpool star said: "We try to give them as normal a life as possible. I try not to impose upon them the difference in their childhood to my childhood or my wife’s childhood. We both grew up very working class, and I remember when they were very young, I used to say or think, like, 'Oh God, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid,' or, 'I never would’ve had this luxury of getting takeout' or whatever."

Despite his claims, fans weren't buying it, insisting his wife Blake had a more lavish upbringing. Her late father, Ernie Lively, was an actor and director, while her mother, Elaine Lively, was an actress and a talent manager.

The Cut had shared Ryan's claim on their Instagram, leading to a backlash from its followers. One user fumed: "You keep using that word, 'working class.' I do not think it means what you think it means.'"

Another blasted: "Stop trying to make Relatable Blake happen, it’s NOT going to happen," while a third said: " Quick search: She grew up in Tarzana and then went to Burbank High. Her whole family was in the entertainment business. She was cast in Sisterhood for the Traveling Pants while she was a teen. It’s giving at least middle class. Anyway none of that matters bc she’s rich and insufferable now. Bye."

A fourth remarked: "Working class people don’t get married on plantaaaaations' in reference to their 2012 nuptials at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina."

Blake and Ryan tied the knot 12 years ago at the venue, but have since apologised for their choice. In 2020, Ryan said the pair feel 'deeply sorry' for the decision which he now views as a 'giant f***ing mistake.'

"What we saw at the time was a wedding venue on Pinterest. What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy," Ryan explained while addressing the controversy in an interview with Fast Company. "It’s something we’ll always be deeply and unreservedly sorry for."
