Ryan Reynolds has said many things about his wife, Blake Lively, during interviews in the past, but one comment he recently made has some folks thinking he might have crossed the line.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that was published on Friday, December 13, the 48-year-old actor claimed that he and Lively, 37, had working-class upbringings.
Reynolds was talking about raising his kids and how he and Lively are trying to give them a normal upbringing, despite their fame, when he told the outlet, "We try to give them as normal a life as possible. I try not to impose upon them the difference in their childhood to my childhood or my wife's childhood."
Later in the interview he said, "We both grew up very working class," referring to himself and his wife, before adding, "and I remember when [his kids] were very young, I used to say or think, like, 'Oh God, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid,' or, 'I never would've had this luxury of getting takeout' or whatever."
People on the internet have been giving the Deadpool & Wolverine actor grief over his comments, but not because of his own upbringing, as his father and mother worked as a policeman and a retail worker, respectively. The outrage is because Lively grew up in an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles and has been considered a nepo baby. Her late father, Ernie Lively, worked as an actor and director, and her mother, Elaine Lively, was an actress and talent agent.
Some users on Reddit have taken to the comments section of a post about the news to share their thoughts on what the actor said.
"Lively is a rung above Nepo Baby; she's actually from a Hollywood Dynasty. The Lively family is all involved in the performing arts, and they're not starving artists. You'd be a rebel in that family if you didn't go into film or theater," wrote one fan about the Gossip Girl alum.
A second said, "Working class for the rich means they actually do have to get up and do some work sometimes, as opposed to just sleeping in and living off your inheritance," while a third crassly wrote, "These two desperately need to stop talking. Blake Lively is a nepo baby, and her own husband not knowing that is weird. She's not in Hollywood based on her acting prowess, I can assure you."
Reynolds and Lively first met in 2010 on the set of Green Lantern and started dating the following year. The couple were engaged in late 2011 or early 2012 and tied the knot on September 9, 2012. The two share four kids: James, 9, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and their youngest, Olin, who was born in 2023.
