Sarah Michelle Gellar has joked about the secret to a long and happy marriage.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star has been married to her former Scooby Doo co-star Freddie Prinze Jr for 22 years and said "separate bathrooms" might be the key.

"If I had that answer, I'd write a book, retire and be living on some island somewhere," Gellar told Fox at first when asked about the secret to an enduring marriage, while promoting Dexter: Original Sin alongside co-star Patrick Gibson.

"I think everything takes work in you, whether it's a friendship or a work relationship or a marriage, you have to put the work in," she said.

"We live in an extremely disposable society now - your phone breaks, you don't fix it, you get a new one. And I think that's a lot of the attitude toward relationships."

After pausing for a moment and to break up the serious tone, the actor added with a laugh: "And I don't know, maybe separate bathrooms, I think".

Gellar and Prinze Jr first met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997 but didn't start dating until 2000.

However, just before their 2002 nuptials, shock jock Howard Stern wagered with Prinze Jr that the marriage would fail.

"So you're going to marry Sarah Michelle Gellar, even though you know that won't last?" Stern asked on an episode of The Howard Stern Show.
