Selena Gomez has confessed she "blacked out" during her audition for a role in the Oscar-tipped operatic musical Emilia Perez.

The 32-year-old US actress and singer attended the film's premiere in Los Angeles, stunning in a black Elie Saab off-the-shoulder gown.

She joined co-stars Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon, Adriana Paz, and Edgar Ramirez on the black carpet of the glamorous event. The French musical, performed in Spanish, tells the story of a Mexican cartel leader (Gascon) who enlists a high-powered lawyer (Saldana) to help fake their own death and undergo sex-reassignment operations.

Gomez plays the drug lord's wife, Jessi Del Monte. Speaking about her audition for the role, she told the Hollywood Reporter that she sang Bienvenida, a big number from the film. She said: "I throw everything around, and I had no idea the concept of what he was going for, the director Jacques (Audiard) literally said to me, act drunk and throw your shoes if you want, and just go crazy."

She added: "I did it once and he was like, 'go crazier'.

"I went totally for it. I was standing on furniture and I blacked out, but I was just singing my heart out and dancing like a mad woman, a drunk mad woman and it was a very crazy experience. But I was honoured when he decided to ultimately go with me."

Gomez shot to stardom as the enchanting child star of Disney's Wizards Of Waverly Place, and more recently wowed audiences with her part in Disney+'s Only Murders In The Building, where she shone alongside comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, reports the Mirror. At the premiere of her newest venture, the starlet confessed she's "open to anything" regarding the roles she might take on down the line, but voiced a hope to continue being "inspired by great filmmakers".

Addressing the Oscars chatter around her latest endeavour, Gomez humbly remarked: "I don't like to think anything or be presumptuous, so I'm just going to say I'm so happy people are receiving it the way they are."

The film sparked major buzz as "movie of the year" following its first snippet last month. With an initial teaser that set tongues wagging back in August, the full trailer finally hit the scenes a month later, leading fans to storm social media with their hype.

Praising the film in the YouTube comments, one admirer claimed it was: "One of the best releases that came out of Cannes."

Another fan extolled the trailer's quality, suggesting it had the hallmarks of an "Oscar winner for best picture."

A further comment read: "This looks actually pretty good I hope Netflix can pull off a Mafia-based musical."

Get set for Emilia Perez, hitting Netflix screens on November 13.
