Shailene Woodley‘s character in Three Women has a devastating update to share with Sloane, played by DeWanda Wise, in episode seven of the Starz drama series, which airs on Nov. 8.

The series, which is based on Lisa Taddeo’s best-selling non-fiction book of the same name, stars Woodley, Wise, Betty Gilpin and Gabrielle Creevy. Like the book, it follows the lives of Sloane (Wise,) Lina (Gilpin,) and Maggie (Creevy,) all navigating different challenges in their personal and sexual lives.

Unlike the book, however, the series introduces Gia (Woodley,) a fictionalized version of Taddeo who serves to link the women together as she interviews each of them for her book. Gia is also at a critical moment in her life, which is where we find her in episode six as she delivers her update to Sloane. She’s pregnant by a man she is not planning to be in a relationship with, and has recently learned she has cancer.

“I have lung cancer. Stage ‘go f-ck yourself,’ they think,” Gia tells Sloane in the above clip. “But they can’t confirm it until I do a contrast MRI. And I can’t do the contrast MRI until the f-cking baby’s born. Oh and the father, who I’m not talking to, keeps leaving me messages that I ask him not to saying things like, ‘Have faith in miracles, Gia.'”

The show, which celebrates self-discovery and personal growth, had a profound impact on Woodley, as she told SheKnows in September. “There’s a lot that I took away from this show,” she said. “Like owning who we are is the most audacious and brave thing we can possibly do, and yet there’s not a lot of examples of it because we’re kind of taught to do the opposite.”

New episodes of Three Women stream on Fridays on Starz.
