Player 456 plans to end the Squid Game once and for all — from the inside.
The second season of the global smash-hit Netflix series picks up three years after the first, which is the same length of time between seasons, as Player 456 scratches his plans to settle in the United States. Retirement doesn’t seem to suit Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) — at least, not as well as the green tracksuit. Our hero also ditches the red dye in his hair, a small but helpful cosmetic change as the new baddie of the bunk beds has purple hair. How do we know the purple-haired contestant is a bad guy? Just see what dude does during Red Light, Green Light.
“Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won,” the “Squid Game 2” synopsis reads.
Here, “won” refers to the Korean currency and not the past tense of “win.” The prize money would exchange to be a bit under $33 million USD, per current rates.
Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo also reprise their roles from Season 1. New cast members include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an. A bunch of them are going to die, probably.
We say “probably” because in the Season 2 trailer, released on Tuesday, November 26, the players revolt against the red-suited henchmen.
“Squid Game” Season 1 (2021) is Netflix’s most-watched series ever — in any language. It also won the first-ever Emmys for a non-English language series. The Firstman Studio series was created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who writes, directs, and executive produces; Kim Ji-yeon also executive produces.
Thus far, “Squid Game” has spawned a reality competition series, a live experience, a virtual-reality adventure, and a multiplayer video game. There’s also a whole bunch of merch.
“Squid Game” Season 2 premieres on December 26, 2024. The third and final season of the series will arrive sometime in 2025.
