NBC’s Saturday Night Live is where viewers go for a good laugh if they are hanging out at home on a Saturday night. The sketches mimic today’s issues, and their guest hosts know how to act their way out of a paper bag. So imagine my surprise when I first saw the sketch show perform a parody of my beloved Real Housewives. I was thrilled to see Bravo get the recognition it deserved. Below are my favorite SNL meets Bravo moments.
The SNL ladies put on quite a show
Perhaps one of the first times SNL honored the Real Housewives with a spoof was 11 years ago. Honestly, it wasn’t even a parody because it was so spot-on. The kingpin and beloved host, Andy Cohen, reprived his job role and sat at the top of the couches to interview some pretty big names. The SNL producers brought back some comedy icons to play the wives, including Kristen Wig, Maya Rudolph, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon, Tina Fey, Laura Dunn, and Amy Poehler. The fact that they got all these legends together in one skit is simply amazing.
And the quotes! Lord, the ladies must have done their homework because, between the head bobs and insults, it felt like I was watching a real reunion. At one point, Kristen clapped, “She is not classy because she is not.” The attack mimicked some of Teresa Giudice’s nonsensical insults, which made her a Bravo treasure. Maya responded, “I’m no weave puller. It’s insane.” The homage was a perfect attempt at recreating the Real Housewives of New Jersey as Rachel channeled her inner Caroline Manzo, noting, “We are family.” The skit even had its own storm-off, complete with a glam squad confessional. Chef’s kiss to this skit!
The Real Housewives of Sante Fe is a franchise Bravo needs
SNL upped their game by creating a South Western franchise with the Real Housewives of Santa Fe. The intro was perfect and completed with a spoof commercial for “One million dollar one-bedroom apartment.” The scene is set at a Mexican restaurant for the women to clear the air. And as any schooled Bravo follower knows, cast dinners never end well. Between Kim Richards shouting at Lisa Rinna and Shannon Storms Beador constantly storming off, the SNL actresses had their work cut out.
Comedians Jean Smart, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Chloe Fineman, Sarah Sherman, and Ashley Padilla rounded out the mock cast. The ladies spoke in confessionals and wore Avant Garde outfits, too. The ladies embraced what it means to be real housewives and joked about how hard their lives were, especially when running their own jewelry companies. One line that had me rolling on the floor was when Jean quipped, “Because he thought you were a horse b*tch!” after another woman said her husband hit on her at the Kentucky Derby. The other quote that had me dying was obviously aimed at Jen Shah as a mock housewife added, “So now For-Profit prisons aren’t a business?!”
Bethenny Frankel is always great material
You know you’ve made it when SNL openly mocks you. Thus, this is the story of Bethenny Frankel. She was a part of the show’s skit on some of the weirdest TikTok users. Basically, without being too dramatic, SNL was able to sum up the entirety of the streaming service, which has lost its way. Actors Kenan Thompson, Ashley, Heidi, Devon Walker, Bowen Yang, and Chloe all posed as a handful of well-known social media influencers, poking fun at their short-form videos. Not surprisingly, Bethenny was at the top of their list.
The former Real Housewives of New York star has been all over TikTok with her personal reviews. She has talked about skin care, Chanel, drug store makeup, and Bravo’s downfall. SNL’s Bethenny noted, “Look at this crab meat. It’s sick!” It’s insane!” The actress had hot sauce dripping down her face as she also wore a seafood bib. The former RHONY star later shared an Instagram Live saying she enjoyed the roast and that she “has been mocked on SNL multiple times.” So it’s safe to say NBC still has a fan in B.
