The first time Ubah Hassan met Brynn Whitfield, Brynn bought a jar of Ubah’s hot sauce, Ubah Hot. “Why did you buy it?” Ubah asked. “I have a hundred of them at home I could bring you.” But she’s like, “No, no, no, girl. Learn how to receive. I’m trying to support you.”
But a few days later, Ubah got a call from her Real Housewives of New York co-star, who said, “I think I’m going to talk about Ubah Hot on the show, and I’m going to give a bad review so you can get airtime.” Seriously?
“Let me tell you something: Do not touch my product,” Ubah told her. “I’m a woman who worked her ass off to be where I am. This product has won awards. Don’t you dare.” Looking back, Ubah realizes that Brynn has been producing herself on the show from Day One.
A gradual buildup to the season-ending blowout on RHONY
“It’s disheartening when you open yourself up, genuinely caring for others, only to discover that to them, you’re merely a colleague,” the Somali-Canadian model told Glamour. “When you’re being real and they’re like, ‘Don’t take it seriously. This is just a show.'”
Ubah leads with her heart. “If someone came to me privately with a concern,” she says, “I always offer kind, loving advice.”
The times Ubah has gotten upset and raised her voice out of frustration, viewers haven’t always seen everything that led up to that point. We only get “snippets” of events. A lot of context is left on the editing room floor.
On the cast trip to Puerto Rico, viewers saw much of the buildup between Ubah and Brynn. At one point, Brynn asked Ubah provocatively, “Why are you here?”
Without thinking, Ubah responded that she was hired, adding, “Maybe you slept with someone to get this job.”
She now “deeply regrets” saying that. At the time she felt like Brynn was pushing everyone to perform for the cameras. “I said that out of frustration … It was a heated moment that came after months of pressure to be something I’m not.”
The pressure builds until Ubah erupts in frustration over Brynn’s manipulation
Then there was the cancer comment that upset Erin Lichy. Ubah only meant to illustrate how sometimes life is beyond our control. At the time, both of Erin’s parents were being treated for cancer (Erin’s father later passed), and she was triggered by the comment. She didn’t realize that Ubah also lost both her parents to cancer.
Next, there is the “prank” on Erin’s husband Abe. When Erin and Brynn called Erin’s husband and put him on speaker for everyone to hear, Ubah didn’t think it was funny. She spilled the beans to Abe, and Erin was angry. It wasn’t funny anyway.
The last straw was Brynn sharing with the other women about her sexual assault, claiming Ubah knew about it. But when Jessel told Ubah about her confession, she was stunned. “That’s so awful,” Ubah said.
Jessel looked at her in surprise and asked, “Wait, you don’t know?”
“Why would I know this?” Ubah responded. “[Jessel’s] face immediately changed to panic and confusion. Then she told me that Brynn had told the girls this … on camera.”
Chaos erupted. Ubah rushed out of the room and confronted Brynn, who “just stared at me with a cold, blank look.” Ubah demanded to know when Brynn had told her this information because she had no memory of it. “In total distress,” Ubah went back to her room and started vomiting.
Ubah and Jessel left to go spend the night at a hotel, and that was the end of the trip, the season, and any friendship between Ubah and Brynn.
The Real Housewives of New York airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Bravo.
