Victoria Beckham is in the mood to celebrate. After 17 years, her fashion house is finally in profit, and tonight she will pick up a major award that proves she’s no longer a wannabe entrepreneur, but the real, highly successful, deal.

She also has a Netflix documentary in production, which promises to be just as successful as Beckham, the hit series about her husband David.

But more than anything, after almost 30 years in the spotlight, Victoria is no longer chasing publicity, having woken up on April 17, when she turned 50, and realised she no longer gave a sh*t.

Victoria, who has four kids, Brooklyn, 25, Romeo 22, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 13, says: “We’ve kind of figured out how to be quite discreet, which is just how we want to conduct our lives right now.

“I suppose it used to be fun to go out and be chased by paparazzi walking down Bond Street – and you would dress knowing you were going to get that. I don’t want that any more.

“I’ve been doing this too long... nowadays, there’s just too much going on; too busy; too many kids to worry about. I woke up at 50, and I gave a s*** less.”

In the interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she speaks proudly of the Victoria Beckham fashion brand, which finally made a profit in 2022.

She said: “It’s a huge accomplishment. The company has been through so much over the last 17 years – ups, downs, restructuring.

“So, finally, to be able to say we’re profitable is something I’m so proud of, because it’s not an easy industry.

“There was a point when this brand was all fires, and every day we were putting them out. But when I created the fragrance, that’s when I believe that we turned from a brand into a house.

“I’ve spent years building the damn foundations. Now I can start really building the house. A friend was talking to one of the kids recently, and said I was a builder. And that’s what I am.”

Victoria says it took the Netflix series Beckham to show her children just how talented a footballer their dad was.

David, who she married in 1999, won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League with Man United, and is the only Englishman to have scored in three World Cups.

But his son Cruz, who is a singer, was oblivious to his father’s biggest successes. Victoria says: “Cruz was like, ‘I didn’t realise that dad was so good at football’. You forget it was a long time ago. They were always at the games, but they were really little, and too young to understand.”

Recalling the reaction after the 1998 World Cup, when David was sent off against Argentina, Victoria says: “David was the same age that Romeo is now. That’s a lot for a 22-year-old. When you’re in it, there’s that sink-or-swim feeling, and you just get on with it. And we had each other, and the rest is history.

“But the thought of my Romeo having to go through it... I don’t know how he would handle that.”

Tonight, Victoria will pick up the Entrepreneur gong at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards for her work in fashion.

Netflix announced in August that production had started on a documentary series about Victoria and her business. Comparing it to the Beckham series, Victoria says: “It’s not going to be as personal. I realise that I am a bit of a travelling circus, even when I’m at work, but this is very fashion-focused. But it’s really shining a light on the business.”
