A homeowner has horrified the internet after sharing some of the creepy and unexplained occurrences she's witnessed at her 263-year-old property.
When homeowner Kayleigh bought the property in Southeastern Connecticut in September 2023, she knew it would come with some character and history given that it's so old. However, what she wasn't counting on were the mysterious occurrences that happen each day.
Kayleigh, 31, who doesn't want to disclose her full name, explained to Newsweek that she's had items go missing, doors swing open and shut at random, and electrical items start playing seemingly by themselves. As hard as she tries to figure out the reason for these occurrences, she says "most of them are unexplainable."
The home has two separate units that each feature two bedrooms, a bathroom, dining area and kitchen. Kayleigh and her husband live in the downstairs unit, and they rent out the upstairs one on Airbnb.
"So far, I've heard footsteps upstairs, TVs turning on, music boxes that play on their own, tapping in the living room, rocking chairs moving, and our Ring camera has caught some bizarre stuff in the attic, like the door moving on its own," Kayleigh said.
"The worst one is when things go missing—I've had the same necklace go missing multiple times. Thankfully it always turns up somewhere random. I once found it upstairs in the bathroom of our Airbnb, even though I keep all my personal belongings in the downstairs unit," she continued.
Since noticing strange things happening in her home, Kayleigh began sharing videos of them on TikTok (@thegreenemanor). One of the clips, which showed everything that hangs from the ceiling swaying, noises which sound like footsteps and the creepy attic, went viral, with more than 3.6 million views and 351,600 likes on TikTok in a matter of days.
Many social media users were horrified, while some tried to offer potential reasons for why they happen.
"With the things swirling around from the ceiling, some people tried to argue that it caused by a draft since it's an old house, which makes sense. But it happens in every room, every day, all year round at random times," Kayleigh told Newsweek.
"You could also argue that it's mice which would explain the weird noises, but we never find any droppings and have never even seen any. We also have cameras in the attic, so we would get a notification if something was moving about up there."
Fortunately, Kayleigh has learned to live with the mysteries. While she says that sometimes it can be annoying to know what's happening, she never feels "any negative vibes" from the house.
The TikTok Reaction
Most of the reactions have been positive. Many people are desperate to find out more about the property, including the history of the house.
In the days since sharing the video of the "creepy things" that happen, the TikTok post has gained more than 4,600 comments.
One comment reads: "Have you considering turning off the haunt and turning it back on?"
Another TikTok user wrote: "The music box randomly playing is an immediate no from me. Instant goosebumps. I'm outta there."
While another person joked: "You have all the horror movies essentials."
