The Buffalo Bills have added two of the biggest names in basketball to their ownership groups.
NBA Hall of Famers and cousins Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady are two of the 10 limited partners added to the Bills' ownership.
NFL team owners approved a measure earlier this year that allows private equity funds to invest in franchises. The league's ownership rules had been among the most restrictive in professional sports.
Bills owner Tery Pegula commented on what these 10 additions mean to his team moving forward.
"This has been an incredible journey to add such an impressive and diverse group of limited partners along with a reputable private equity partner in Arctos that has an extensive track record of success with professional sports franchises," said Pegula.
"They all have all achieved high levels of success in their respective industries and we're grateful for their interest in our team, our sport, and the future of the Buffalo Bills. Most of them have a personal attachment with our team, Western New York or Southern Ontario which was a very important factor to me."
"There are so many people I'd like to thank for their assistance and guidance throughout this process: Steve Greenberg, Terry Morris, Mike Melnitzky and the rest of the crew at Allen & Company. Roger Goodell, Christine Dorfler, Joe Siclare, Jay Bauman, and Cyrus Ghavi from the National Football League. Joe Leccese, Jason Krochak, Amanda Nussbaum, Sean Wildes, Alon Elhanan, Bowon Koh and Alexander Amir at Proskauer. Our team at the family office, including my daughter, Laura Pegula, Adam Gusky, Gary Hagerman, and John Sieminski, deserves a lot of credit as well as Pete Guelli, Terry Gilbride and Josh Dziurlikowski at the Bills. It truly was a total team effort."
Pegula said that the former All-NBA players will help grow the Bills' market in Toronto. Pegula picked the two right people to do just that, as they helped uplift the Raptors into the team we know today in Canada.
McGrady was a seven-time NBA All-Star and spent the first three seasons of his career as a Raptor from 1997-2000. The Raptors selected him with the No. 9 overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft.
As for Carter, he played 22 seasons in the NBA and spent his first six seasons in Toronto from 1998-2004. Carter was named an eight-time NBA All-Star and won the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year. Cater holds the record for most points scored in a season for the Raptors: 2,107 in the 1999-2000 season.
