As viewers of Sister Wives, we have always known that Kody Brown thinks of himself as a bit of a victim. Now, we know that the TLC star is delusional, but the man took it a step further in the newest episode of the series, which aired this week. Kody has been doing a great job at pushing his first three wives away and has been left divorced and bitter. But no matter what comes his way, Kody really tries always to wear his pink-colored glasses where nothing ever goes wrong in his world.
Kody Brown is no Sonny Bono
It turns out Kody was a supporter of the late singer-turned-politician. Sonny Bono and Cher were together for 13 years and married for six. But after three years in front of the camera for their famed 1970s show, the couple called it quits. The duo returned to their show in 1976 with an awkward handshake. But in reality, they went from being a power couple to dealing with a bitter divorce. Cher was just 16 and 21 years younger when the pair met, but their relationship was fraught with issues. Both found different partners while still married, and it seemed their love had just grown apart. During the Sister Wives episode, Kody acknowledged what the most significant 20th-century break-up did to him.
The patriarch shared, “When Sonny and Cher got divorced, I was six, I was five, and it broke my heart,” he shares. “It freaked me out. I was like, divorce is the biggest evil of, you know, it’s just something that saddened me.” It didn’t surprise fans that Kody felt he could compare himself to the singer as he added, “At six and seven years old, I had no awareness that the idea, the concept of divorce, was real.” Sonny and Kody might have been a bit vindictive as Sonny retained ownership of their music rights. But that is as far as the comparison goes.
Kody Brown is all about riding the wave
During the episode, Kody went on to say “Sonny and Cher getting a divorce was devastating. Like, does that really happen?” The breakup shocked the father of 18, much like his own. He added, “This isn’t supposed to be part of the story that I’m writing about myself. You know what I mean? And everybody’s their story. You’re the author of your story. My story is taking a turn.” In Kody’s mind, he feels that the entire family has leaned into their new normal.
But Sister Wives fans would argue Kody had just put his head in the sand. The polygamist has not rectified his issues with his older children and instead has doubled down on the fact that they should apologize. Kody shared, “We’ve crashed the ship. We survived. We’re on the shore, but we crashed the ship. That’s the realization. We crashed the ship, and that does make me terribly sad.” As the tears welled up, I couldn’t help but think that this emotional outburst was perfect for reality TV.
Kody Brown is never going to take the blame
During an earlier Sister Wives episode, Kody shared that he regretted the demise of his three marriages. He told viewers, “There’s even the regret of the divorce — Meri, Janelle, and Christine — those divorces and being angry during those divorces. Sure, I regret that stuff.” For Kody “There will always be the moment you said, ‘I wish I would’ve taken advantage,’ and there’s the regret. But see, that’s all over now, and everybody’s healing. And so now we can move forward, and we can just take those steps that create less regret.”
I admit that Kody has one thing in common with Sonny: his long locks. It’s funny how Kody tries to emulate who he once idolized, even though he has come nowhere close to such a successful career. However, he could have learned one important lesson from Sonny and Cher. Kody could have moved on as the two pop icons did. They might have held a grudge or two, but when it came to the camera, they were still a united front. Sadly, Kody is just as clueless now as he was when he was six.
